I'll make a stab at it. The index number is just a numbering tool that you can use to identify more than one type of the same fixture, for example. Let's say I want to patch in eight RGB fixtures to my DMX universe and the first RGB fixture I will indicate to start at DMX channel 40 instead of channel 1. If I leave the index number at 1 and then patch the eight RGB fixtures, you will see the fixtures named RGB.1, RGB.2, RGB.3, etc. This will help you keep track of each fixture during editing if you want to do certain effects but not on all of them as a group. If you don't bother with the index number it won't affect anything you do to set up your lighting, it will just keep incrementing higher as you add fixtures....like RGB.1, RGB.2, scanner.3, scanner.4, laser.5, laser.6. If you don't like that than change the index number back to 1 for each 'different' class of fixture; e.g. RGB.1, RGB.2, scanner.1, scanner.2, laser.1, laser.2 ... however you wan't to use it. I suppose you could use the index number to correspond to the DMX channel assigned, but there are other ways to see that.
