ADJ Inno Spot LED - Damaging other fixtures over DMX line
Hi, I wonder if anyone has experienced this issue before and if anyone has any idea what is happening here, it's a puzzle and any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
I have six ADJ Inno Spot LED fixtures, the ones with 50W LED light sources not the pocket spots. I bought them from new just before they were discontinued (which is typical for me) :-)
Soon after I started using them, I noticed that occasionally, other devices on a common DMX spur would start to smoke (on initial connection). So badly on occasion that some devices became charred and unusable (I hesitate to use the word "fire"). Over the years I've lost fixtures, DMX dongles and finally, one of the output stages from my new Chamsys MQ50 when I accidentally connected one of the Innos directly without going through a DMX splitter.
I now only ever connect my controller to any fixtures via splitter/isolators.
I quickly identified the source of the damage down to one or more of the Innos and now use an ADJ D6 Branch to distribute the DMX signal to them. This is the hardiest option I’ve tried but that too, once had its DMX output board fried by the Innos. I had to buy a replacement DMX output board from ADJ and swap it out. Now each of the Innos have there DMX signal passed to them via a direct and dedicated DMX cable from the D6 splitter.
Diagnosing the issue was hampered by its intermittent nature and it would appear as though there is not a single culprit fixture but can be any of them.
Note that the device receiving the damage does not have to be energised to receive damage from the Innos and disconnecting it from the power supply does not stop the burning. Only removing the DMX cable prevents total destruction.
I was so concerned about this problem causing a serious event that I spoke with ADJ technical support who advised that a main board replacement on the Innos should resolve the issue. I purchased six new main boards and replaced them. I still have exactly the same problem.
I know that these are aged fixtures now but they were quite pricey at the time and they still project fantastic arial effects. I would love to keep them but I’m really concerned that using them may lead to a serious fire at some point.
Has anyone got any idea what’s likely to be happening here and is there something I could try to resolve this?
