I recently purchased a couple Tri-Gem's and Aggressor Tri-LED lights. They are purely sound activated.

The venues I gig in are thatched roofed, 'open air' beach bars, i.e., usually open on two sides to catch any breeze with the thatched roof serving as the 'ceiling'.

I've mounted the lights on a crossbar designed to hang from the exposed beams. My last two gigs I hung the lights a few feet above & behind me, 'firing' over my head onto the dance floor & audience. My speakers are about 15' apart and slightly forward of the lights.

My problem is, I have a 1000w PA that I REALLY have to crank up (way too loudly for the club) to get the lights to 'trigger' to the sound. I presume this is due to the open air nature of the club as the lights trigger fine in a more enclosed space per my 'sensitivity testing'.

Any ideas/suggestions?

You would be correct in that the open air nature is what is causing this to happen. The lights mainly trigger off of low frequencies from what I gather. In an open air environment, there is nothing for bass to bounce off of and reverberate throughout the space. This is often why outdoor shows have a much more bottom heavy then top heavy PA systems. You need the extra subs to actually get any bass out of the system.

You can try two things really. Get a small, satellite speaker whose job is solely to trigger the lights or get two light trees and place them closer to the speakers. In a large environment, I don't think you will be able to bring in enough subs to trigger the lights where they are unless the sub sits right under them.
