Elation DMX Operator Pro channel patching question

Hi there,
apologies in advance for asking n00b questions, but I'm kinda new to the whole DMX thing...
I try to patch various LED controllers' DMX channels to one fader on the Controller Pro board, e.g. DMX channels 4 through 6 to fader 4.
The manual on page 34/35 wasn't very helpful at that point, because it will let me patch Channels 4, 5 and 6 to OUT 4, but when I go on to save, it quits with ERR. What am I missing? I know the easy way would be to just set the controllers to listen to the same channel, but unfortunately that's not an option.
