I have ( 6 ) Color 150 DMX color changers. I've programmed them using my DMX board for scenes and chases. Thees units aren't dimmable nor do they have a blackout shutter ( lamp is on or off ). You can't get them to chase or change that quickly because the gobo runs wild trying to find the next color and the relay is clicking like crazy trying to blackout and fire back up. I'd be willing to invest more money in better changers if I could get ones that change gobos quickly and can blackout / turn on faster. the Color 250D's are an option. They are dimmable so I'm wondering if they can turn on/off quicker. I'm guessing the gobo would still be spinning trying to find the next color though. Do I need to go way high-end to get ones to meet my needs ( $500+ )....is this where "slot gobos" come into place? Are they faster?

If you want the fixtures to quickly expose light and then hide the light without turning the bulb off you'll need a fixture with a shutter (preferably a high speed one for fast chases and strobe effects). This allows the bulb to stay fully on and warmed up for color consistency.

The Accu Color 250 offers all of those features, but it does have a higher price tag. The Color 250D's do have dimming, but I'm not sure how their reaction time is. The dimming will be bulb dimming rather than a mechanical dimmer, which won't be as quick as a shutter, but I suppose still better than nothing.

To get the most out of the fixtures you have or even the 250D's, I'd try this: The trick to programming chases would be to use colors that are adjacent on the color wheel. If you pick colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel, you will get that rainbow flash effect while the wheel spins rapidly to get to the next color in the chase. So when you program scenes and chases, make the color changes in the order of the color wheel in the fixture to avoid the fluttering and your changes will be as tight and precise as the fixtures will allow. This will also let you run slightly faster chases as well.

thanks for the input.....I am trying to make the scenes flow now by programming to adjacent colors. It's much smoother. I'm surprised the gobos don't make a complete circle to get back to white ( the "first" color on the wheel ). You'd think they would be made to spin in the direction to get to the next color fastest. I have checked out the Accu Color's and they're great. I just hate to sink a bunch more cash right now if i can get a decent show out of these......
