Lately I've confused myself on SNR when I looked it up in a dictionary to make sure if my definition was right. Could someone re-explain SNR to me? and if a higher SNR is good or bad?

Signal to noise is just that. How much signal (in our case audio) verses how much noise is present in a device/medium.
Generally, a higher SNR is better than a lower SNR.

it's a measure of how many decibels (of music) must be present for one decibel of noise.
Example: a cd player has a signal to noise ratio of 88 dB,
for every 88 decibels of sound that is present, there is 1 decible of noise (usually hiss)
