RECORDING ISSUE

Imac 21.5 OS10.6 , Traktor Pro latest update, VMS4 3.11 When i record the monitor sounds fine no distortion at all. But when i go for the play back I get hard crackling distortions spaced out 10 seconds here 3 seconds there, and the rest will be clear. Any ideas what could cause this?
