options for control surface to override program for live applications?

i have a nanokontrol, is there a way to be able to override values in a scene so i could change colors on the fly? that only way i could control anything is when i switched to editor mode. is this the only way to do that? is there a way to do that in the user mode? another thing, whats the auto/ltp/htp button used for, is that the secret? thanks.
