Hi, I have a problem,

I got asked to do my schools caf jam, and was wondering what I need... like how many speakers, amps, truss , lighting, mixers. etc. The concert is about 200 people watching, and goes for little over 3 hours. In every band there is a drummer, 3 guitarists, and singer. if that helps on any of the numbers.. for equipment....
By the way I am sponsered by Yamaha sound I can usually borrow anything

HELP ME PLEASE

is it going to be outdoor or indoor??...if indoor...how big is the place??...are u going to mic the drums??...do u have to supply the bands equipment like mics, guitar/bass heads and speakers??...or are they going to have u plugged into an exsiting system to make it louder??...as for lights...i know nothing about lights...i just know what i think looks good...
for lights you can use 8 or so par cans w/ different colors. and 8 or so more pars chasing to the beat of the music behind the bands and out to the crowd. you can use two moving heads to spot light soloists and scan the crowd. you don't want too amazing of a light show because then you will take attention away from the band.
as for audio...you said that you could borrow from yamaha...i don't know their products but if you email me i can talk to you about some other manufacturers that would work perfect - dj_borris@hotmail.com - so let me know.
the question that was asked about drum mics...i dbout you would need any if its only a ***** of 200 but if its outside then you will because peoople will wander around for 3 hours. so you would need a mixer with many mic inputs with preamps. if your indoors, how big is the room your in? For trussing you should use adj's crank stand truss...the ones that go up 15 feet. get two of those...one for infront of the band and one for behind. if you don't get good enough light you could also add two more tripods off the the left and right of the crowd with par cans on those. also remember that each band is going to ask for something different. if ya can talk to the bands ahead of time and get info on how many mics they want and ather such things. DO NOT ask how loud they want it...because i can answer that...they all want it LOUD!!!! as do students. hope this helps

Well youre going to need mics for the guitar and bass cabs and then depending on the amount of toms and cymbals and bass drums for the drummer your going to need mics to cover that. Allot of cable and a snake can help. If you can, monitors for the musicians and a monitor board(not really needed, but nice). A sound board that covers all your channels. Also depending on your sound system you may need multiple amps and power.

The main thing to know was already said. The musicians will want it loud but they dont hear the mix. A nice bass beat and clean guitar solos go allot better with vocals then just pumping up the singers vocals and all you hear is screaming with music in the background. You can have a small sound system and still have a great concert if mixed clean rather then loud.
even if you did have a ton of intels, you wouldn't want much of that set up becasue they will take away from the performers, some color changers on the bands would be a nice effect. another thought would be to set a verigo behind the band, or raised up behind them with a fog machine or hazer to show the beams, it would look really neat. but a huge intel show is goign to take away from the bands.

Thanks for the advice.

I did my concert last night and it couldnt of gone any better! The Sound was amazing for what I had, I ran two 1000 watt main speakers(15inch), with one 500 watt powered sub. Then I had 4 monitors that were 350 watt continous (12inch) . To power the mains I had a *** RMX 2450, and to power the monitors I had some old peavey amp that rain 500 watts a side. And I also used a Mac*ki*e 16 channel board. NOW to talk about ADJ's amazing lighting. Behind the band as suggested, I had adk crank 2 system, with , 1 Adj mega strobe, 4 Pocket scans. ( you would think that they would be washed out and not bright enough but that wasnt the issue at all) infront of the performers I had 2 tripods with T bars, and I had the yorkville lighting packs... they were kinda od, that I also threw in some ADJ parcans to help out for more colors etc. to finish this off I ran a adj haze generator. I had staging also that was about 2ft high which was enough for this small , 200 person caf jam.

thats about it...

Borris,

Please explain how too much lighting takes away from the performers? Personally, lighting is icing on the cake...incredible intelligent lighting makes it even sweeter. They can augment a performer, but not take away from their performance...case in point...ever see Pink Floyd live? Case Closed...

first of all pink floyd broke up when i was 3...case closed.
second, back then intels weren't what they are now.
third; they weren't in a school with only 200 people watching
fourth; it DOES take away from the performers because people are going to be too busy gawking at the lights shining in thier eyes and now enough on the performance. i'm not saying intels are bad for concerts. when dj steph saif to get a **** load of intels, it kinda sounded to me like he was supposed to fill a couple of trusses with like 30 intles. that many intels would be awsome...at a linkin park park outdoor concert where the lights are 50 feet up and the crowd is over a couple thousand. a **** load just sounded like too much...

Ahh...so that makes you what now then? Oh wait...that's right, they're still together...please get your facts straight before posting about something you know nothing about.

As for too much? Nah...if done properly, you simply can't have too much as the secret is in the programming...and if the programming is done within the imposed restrictions of height etc...you can still have a tremendous show without blinding anyone.

Finally, Pink Floyd was one of the first acts to use intelligent lighting in their shows...their last Pulse tour was incredible to say the least. Granted, technology advances, yet none of the acts I've seen in the last 10 years even begins to rival the last live rig they took out.

Once again, lighting merely augments a performer and their performance. Better lighting makes it even better. When you have an excellent system that's properly programmed and executed, well, you'd just have to be there to understand. If you pick up a copy of the Pink Floyd Pulse video, it really doesn't do the live act justice, but at least you'll understand what I mean.

One other thing, I've been performing in front of audiences since 1969 both musically, on air, live sound and mobile work...I don't know how that works into your age, but it might give you an idea I do have some working knowledge of the entertainment world.

borris,
I know Bob, and I believe he is just trying to be helpful, please don't take is comment the wrong way as you are just as valuable to this forum as he is. And remember everyone has their own opinions, and as the old saying goes opinions are like....

Bob is a good guy, and I'm sure he doesn't mean to offend anyone, he is also a very busy man, and doesn't get to check this forum every day, so you may not see a response in the near future if not ever. That is why I feel I should let you know this way. Besides you are just as edumaceted as the rest of us (if not more)....So yes you are plenty smart enough to help out around here. Wink
And my edumucation was a LONG time ago! Eeker

No, I wasn't stating opinion on any breakup. The fact is, that when Sid left or was forced out, the band nevr broke up at al. They continued on and became a much better band without him. When Roger left they also continued on with David Gilmour handling the vocal duties. While not releasing an album in some time now, David recently pointed out they're working on a new project with no timetable for completion. A tour will then likely follow the release of this work.

As for opinion, yes, absolutely that is my opinion about their live lightshow. However, I'm in very good company as most anyone who has actually seen them live as well as a host of others including todays hottest acts with the most recent equipment can attest to the same thing.

If something is fact, I'll always call somebody on it, opinions are like...well, you know the rest...but if enough of the right people share the same opinion then there's likely a lot of truth to it.

Nobody ever said you weren't smart enough, merely that you have your facts wrong about Pink Floyd, nothing more.

Bob
