I am new to MyDmx and am very satisfied with all the features (that I have figured out so far) offer with the software.

I have read over the manual, browsed the forums, and watched multiple video via youtube. My quest relates to the use of groups. From what I understand about the function of the feature, I cannot seem to get it to work.

2 Questions

Can someone describe the intended use?

How do I create these groups?

Despite my efforts, I have found no information to support the use of this feature.

One thing I like about the color manager is that all RGB fixtures can be selected at once. This has been a great tool for me when adding new fixtures to existing scenes.

Limiting this portion to my American DJ RGB LED fixtures
For example, I started with 8 64 LED Pros. I then added 4 Mega Panels. I then added 8 Mega Bar 50's. Later, I will be adding 8 Elation Opti Tri Pars and 8 Elation RGB Zooms. While a variant, I also have 2 ADJ Color Fusions, which also use RGB mixing. I can have all of these lights available at once for choosing colors.

Similarly, my 4 Chauvet Intimidator Colors can be be brought up at once in the color manager together, which has made selecting the right color on the color wheel a breeze.

Now, in the show I am designing(I'm redoing it using Compu Show as we speak), the following is how the lights will be set:

Groups would help me out if they worked in a way that I could find useful. For example, 64 LED Pros 1 and 5 cover the same area, but from different sides of the stage(Stage Right). 2 and 6 cover Stage Right Center, 3 and 7 cover Stage Left Center, and 4 and 9 cover stage left. Lights 1-4 are on one tree, while 5-8 are on another tree. Using groups would have helped set a lot of scenes faster. But I adapted and I still got a fantastic lighting show out of MyDMX by not quitting. Overall, I still got things done on time and under budget.

Is there a reason to absolutely require groups?
I do not understand what the numbered groups 1-9 (located in the color manager window on the right hand side)do. I thought that one assigned would allow me to set each group (1-9) to activate any combination of RGB fixtures in the color manager window.

Example

I have 5 ADJ Megabar 50's, and 5 ADJ 38b LED par cans. I thought I would be able to assign a combination of fixtures to group #1 so that clicking one color would change ALL selected fixtures to that color

Then assign group #2 to a different combination of fixtures that would change to whatever color selected.

Theoretically, I would be able to program 9 different combinations of fixtures all of which could be set to a specific color on in one click.

Furthermore, these combinations could be saved and even altered as more fixtures are added.

Im I way off here gentlemen?
ahhh THAT grouping. That allows you to store different groups in the color manager. simply left click one or multiple fixture and then click the green plus button to assign those fixtures to the blue group button that will appear blue after you select the plus. This only stores groups in the color manager but should be a very useful tool for anyone who uses color manager a lot. NOTE: You can only assign a total of 9 groups. after 9 groups have been assigned the plus button goes gray and you cannot make any more.

Sincerely,
Nothing to be sorry about. You live, you learn!

That show is all programmed and "finalized", at least in MyDMX. Now it's time to convert it and do it again in a software package that is more oriented to what I am trying to do: Compu Show.

No folks, I'm not abandoning MyDMX. The show I'm working on is really not well suited for MyDMX. The fact that I CAN do it using MyDMX is fantastic, but it's just not the ideal product for the job.

MyDMX will still be used quite frequently. I have plenty of simple shows this will work just fine with. Plus, having to let DJ's not familiar with the product use MyDMX, it's a snap for them. Click and play. Let's them focus on their job if I can't be around to run lights.
