I was wondering if anybody has experienced scratchy or distorted sounds on the PS2 using cdr's burned at high speeds say 24x-40x ? Or could it be that the unit is the problem... I appreciate any feedback

Most likely it's your CD media. My suggestion is that you burn at much slower speeds (2x or 4x) and use quality CD-R Audio CDs. Quality audio discs that conform to "standards of the Orange Book Part 2". I use Sony CD-R Audio disc (you can get them at Staples). They work great! Just make sure you read the label and make sure the audio discs are "Orange Book Part 2". Also make sure you have a high bit rate when burning (at least 160kbps).
In short:
1. Slow burn speeds (2x - 4x only)
2. High quality bit rate (at least 160kbps)
3. Use high quality discs that "Conform to the Orange Book Part 2"
It only makes sense; DJs spend a lot of money on all their equipment, and in return should also purchase quality discs for their music. We're talking maybe 20 cents more per disc.
