hey,
i know for a fact that it is not bad for a light to be hung on it's side (perpendicular to the truss).cuz almost ALL light's are built to be able to be hung in any safe position.But I am not to sure about the heat that the other units were emitting ...but what do you mean by (were sitting on top of our mains.)???

XP3s should NOT be used on their sides as it puts too much pressure on the gears. This, however, doesn't really help you with this question.

How about the auto spots..they seem to be okay on their side?

ya sorry.... Dj Madness is right and i think that, that is why the unit that was emitting more heat then the other's was because the gears were working harder cuz they were on there side.

but i know that you can hang light's on there side but i guess it not all light's ...(maby only the higher end light's in the market)

I'm pretty sure it's only isolated to the XP3s. Higher end lights such as the Autospot 150 and lights from other manufacturers can be hung on their sides.

either way they should be able to hang anyway you want them to, unless typed in the owners manual.

No lights that are moving heads should be hung sideways that puts to much pressure on the gears. Try it yourself with 10 lbs, hold it out to your side and see how heavy it feels.

They why does the XP-3 owners manual explicity state that they can be hung any which way?

Page 15 - "The XP-3 can be mounted to a wall or may be hung from a truss."

That tells me explicity that the XP-3's can be truss mounted or mounted perpindicular to the floor (how I have them mounted on my truss). What's the deal?

Pro lights can be hung in any postion. The gears on good lights are made to be hung like that. Just look and any large concert, the lights are every which way.

hans that should read "ceiling" not wall. Never mount the xp3 sideways.

So where do I return my XP-3's that are now smoked because I followed the owners manual? :-)

Seriously - I have been mounting them vertially on a truss because the OWNERS MANUAL said I could. And now one of them at least is behaving very badly. I just purchased these three weeks ago.

The owners manual I have been using was downloaded from the American DJ website at the time of my purchase. It seems that a blatant error like this should be fixed - can you guys at least update the online manual?

These were factory refurbs I purchased 3 weeks ago (well, closer to 2 weeks - total duty time is about 16 hours in the vertical position, they no longer track together, one of them sort of "flops", the other is really slow - they were both really crisp when I first hung them) - they carry a 90-day warranty. Can I still get an RA for repair?

You have to talk to your dealer about it. Cause I know some dealer that cover refurbeds warrenty not ADJ so some dealer you have to get an RA number from them.
