Just addressing one of the MANY issues I have to address, one being having to run a sepparate DMX cabling since it has been advised to not use regular low impedance XLR cabling. Basically: don't run it down my 200-foot whip. Fine.

To save time(that's always my goal), I want to be able to do DMX wirelessly. My objective is to run DMX from my DMX Operator into the transmitter, then from the receiver go into a rack mount DMX splitter, then take my leads from there. Why a DMX Splitter? Lead to rear of stage lighting, front of stage lighting, and anything on the floor in front of the stage, plus a possible split to follow-spots.

I can find plenty of products, but now I'm waiting around to hear pricing. I hate that. Just give my list prices, street is always lower but I have to have something to work with.

ADJ, have anything in the works? I'd say re-tool your existing DMX splitter into a 1RU unit with a built-in power transformer and uses an IEC cabnle. Have the receiver be an optional module that can be added at time of sale or user-installed afterwards, but sold with a transmitter. Good idea?

Alternately, have the transmitter be a universal type item, while the receiver can be built in a module for the rack unit I described, and a model that is stand-alone.

I'm not saying I won't be getting cabling. I'm about to spend a bunch on cable and connectors because I have to continue to move forward.

While Wireless dmx is out there, there are still bugs with it. Many of the items in your price range aren’t the best and who wants a dropped signal during the climax of your show? Not me.

I'm not saying wireless dmx is impractical, just that a good system that would be reliable would cost a bit much, up into the $1000's at least. Check out the company that makes those dmx fans and the Mac series moving lights for some options in wireless dmx. There’re a bunch of companies that make them, but I have little experience with wireless dmx. I have only used it a few times myself.

As my theater teacher always told me, wireless systems only get rid of one problem (wires) while creating many more others for you.

As for a splitter the elation branch of American dj has a few more splitter options, one of which can be rack mounted.

Btw- sounds like you have a quite impressive show going on there Smiler

Please don't worry about "in my price range" type of responses. I am after solutions, not hearing "excuses". I carry around around a quarter million dollars in sound gear to gigs, so being a cheap-o isn't something I deal with. I get it done. Period. Cost is rarely an issue. Having said that, I've been putting off getting a matched pair of AGK 414's.

Lights are my Achilles heal. It's something I would rather not deal with, but something I have been forced to. But, my problem is that my crew is unreliable and I just don't have time to motivate during an event. Instead of asking questions, they go on endless break, and then I have to do THEIR job on top of my job. It's hard enough to get them to run the 200 foot whip and then 2 200-foot Cat5's, so it's not going to be fun trying to get them to run a 200-foot 120-ohm XLR on top of everything else. Then there's the poor wrap jobs they afterwards. I got yelled at for telling someone to just drop a spool and go to another spool because their previous wrap-job resulted in tangles and we didn't have time to undo it. I took 20 minutes last week untangling that disaster, when he was fussing with it for 15 minutes before I told him to drop and change cables.

Considering I can easily budget $5K for this, I think I can afford something. Regardless, the Elation product is something I have my sights on for the splitter.

Now I am adding multi-camera video shoot/production into my show productions, and I definately don't want to have to do video switching AND lights AND Main mix AND monitor mix AND recording. Someone else should be handling non-audio functions.

Now, in regards to "who wants a dropped signal during the climax of your show". Me neither, but typically, I have an idiot promoter who seems to think everything runs on free oxygen, and apparently I should be able to run a zillion fixtures on a single 15-amp circuit. Right now, I am examining generators in the 200+ amp range so I can run sound and lights off diesel and not even have to deal with house power issues. I'll front-end it with some Furman AC-series units.

I'm trying to remove excuses, increase efficiency and am in the process of getting both better paying jobs AND better crew.

Check out my October 1, 2005 event. That was an example of getting power an hour before show, and 1 15amp circuit for lighting. There's video, but none showing the breakers popping. My light shows blow, but I'm working on that. Right now I got some movers, but I'm going to get some scanners soon, and then learn scenes in my DMX Operator and document then snot out of the scenes so I know what I'm calling up. I've gotten some good advise here.
I'm sorry for my post before, I just thought you were more of a dj then a full blown production company. My apologies.

Any ways the system I was talking about would do for you. It’s very reliable and can ease set-up time for sure. It's also rack-mountable for both ends.

Let us know which direction you choose! Smiler

p.s.- your website was down when I tried it today.
I'm definately not a DJ. Outside of lights, I don't own any DJ-type gear. I'm a pro audio engineer.

My web site has been down quite a bit recently. My ISP has been very unreliable recently, and today, the 25th of October in Sacramento, it was very windy so I'm sure the wind was blowing the RF out of the antenna(I use a wireless provider). I'm getting fed up with the outages.

In the meantime, I'm making new contacts and swinging deals for audio and lighting. Constantly moving forward between corporate events and my events.

Next puchase will be DMX cabling and ends. I'll build them myself, just for something to do with my spare time. Regardless if I go wired or wireless, I need to have a wired solution no matter what. I can always go wireless later on.

Off to snooze. Gotta get up at 5AM for my gig.
