What to start with?

Welcome to the site. It sounds like your on the right track with what to start out with. The Pod series of lights are good also to start off with once you have some par cans, or pin spots. Mirror ball maybe. Flame bowls are nice. The Saga is a very nice light, has a duty cycle though. Lets see what others say. This topic comes up quite a bit with newbies. Party Gobo lamp is a nice inexpensive effect that can run all night. I suggest you get stuff that can be run for long periods since you will only have limited lighting to begin with. Later on get into some duty cycle lights, (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for cooling).

Get a Mini-Gressor, an Electra, and two of the white constant moving RotoPods for slow songs. Thats about $300 there.

I'd say like a Millenium and a Mini-Gressor, or a Lotus or something. Just anything that fills up a room.

A mini gressor is good cuz it's a light you run all night. A Barrel flex might be nice too. A 12 inch mirror ball is good for slow dances, and 2 color wheel pinspots. You also need an LTS-50 truss to hang the lights. O-Clamps are great cuz they don't mar up the light stand. Then build on from there.
