The stage setter is made to run pars and isnt really made for intelligent lights, you can still program scenes with the scanners, but if u want to make some nice chases, shows its tricky. You should look into The Dmx operator pro, it was designed to run intelligent lights, as well as pars----
http://www.americandj.com/product.asp?ProductIDNumber=1400&cat=DMX_Controllers As for the DP-DMX20 you can not plug intelligent lights ino this. An intelligent light acts like a commputer, Every time the power is didsoncected it takes about 15-20 seconds to "Re-boot" it self.
Most intelligent lights have shutters built into them, so you just program the shutter to close when ever you dont want any light coming from that fixture.
As for scanners, it all depends on your budget. Personaly i think Moving heads look best on stages
since you said you are doing plays, you might want something with rotating gobos (extra money)
Scanners:
ACCU SCAN 250-Hight output 250watt Discharge, Rotating gobos- 800$ each-----
