Hi all of you,
we're quite desperate, so we hope you can help us with the following persistent VMS4-issue.

My son bought 3 months ago a new VMS4 (with VirtualDJ LE included) as his first digital controller. He has a DJ room in our basement with several lighting equipment and a smoke machine.
When activating the smoke machine with the switch or sometimes also the stroboscope, the VMS4 stops playing and got stuck, probably because of the USB-connection that gets lost. You understand this is very annoying... It looks as if the switch activity of these devices create some kind of radiation that interfere with the USB-connection that gets lost and gets the system blocked. He needs to reset the VMS4 and start VirtualDJ again before he can continue playing.

We already tried the following, without any success:
-putting the smoke machine and the VMS4 on seperate power circuits
-using the notebook with batteries, VMS4 powered via the notebook so no connection with the wall outlet and thus complete separation with the other devices
-using an active and powered USB-amplifier between the VMS4 and the notebook
-using 3 different notebooks (2 IBM's and 1 Samsung)
-the VMS4 has been sent twice to the Dutch Service Point (once 4 weeks and once 2 weeks): no problems detected, no intervention done

But the problem persists...

We really do not know what else we can test.

Does anyone of you has had a similar experience or does anyone has any tips or tricks for us?

Thanks a lot and best regards,

Mario from Belgium

Hi,
I was reading your thread and I solved mines with what is called a "Power Conditioner." It's probably the best investment you could buy for any USB/Midi based DJ mixers and CDJ's (Or any DJ system for that matter). I use one from APC and a rack mount version from Monster(Monster Power PowerCenter PRO 3500). When you pop smoke machines, they spike A LOT of power from any electrical system, so your son's VMS4 stops working. It's not just the VMS4 this effects. I've seen Traktor S4's and ******* controllers go bad (Jog wheels and CDJ's stop working). When you buy one, you will need one over 2700-2800 Joules or over to counter the spike of fog machines. Hope this helps, it has for me.

Thanks for your reply!
I unfortunately do not think that this would solve the problem because:
1. I already tried to use an isolation transformator, without any success
2. I even have this problem when powering the VMS4 by the battery of the notebook, so without any physical connection or cables in the outlet.

So the problem rather seems to be provoced by some kind of radiation, instead of power peaks.

What do you think?

Greetings,
Mario
Hi,
the story continues...but no solution!
These are our recent actions:
-our dealer came in our house to test with their Traktor Kontrol S4 console and it worked without any problems.
-we redid all tests with our VMS4, even with an isolated shielded carbon USB cable that's worth more than €100, but the problem is still there.
-we went with our VMS4+notebook to one of our friends to test in their DJ room and we had the same problem: when switching their fog machine (different brand), the VMS4 blocked and stopped playing. Their Numark Mixdeck console did work correctly with our notebook and USB cable.

So I'm pretty sure it's the VMS4 controller that causes these problems, although the device has been checked twice in the European Support Center in Kerkrade (The Netherlands)...

So I contacted Support Europe again this morning explaining this, but they said they could not help me any more! I asked for a new VMS4.1 to test because this new device should be better shielded and thus less sensitive to radiation, but that was not possible either!

So I'm very disappointed in the Service of American Audio. Our device is brandnew (bought in October) and has had these unacceptable problems since the beginning but even then they refuse to send me a VMS4.1 to test.

I spent numerous hours and days testing everything!
It's a pity because I would be glad to test the VMS4.1 to see if this controller would work, as all the other brands I tested.

Probably we will have our dealer refund the VMS4 and we'll end up buying another brand of controller: Numark N4, ******* ERGO or Traktor S2...

greetings,

Mario
Hi,
the issue has finally been solved!
Our dealer got our VMS4 exchanged for a new VMS4.1 and that one works perfectly, no problem at all!
So it was what we thought: a faulty VMS4. Maybe only my VMS4 (which is bizar because the device has been checked twice in the European Service Center) or maybe it's a structural shielding problem with VMS4 in general...
Anyway, the VMS4.1 works really very well and my son is very happy with it. Nice controller!
All's well that ends well...

Greetings and thank you all for your replies,
Mario
