here are my testing impressions, i have tested the vms4 a whole day with traktor scratch pro using an audio8 and a denon 3700 and the mapping of dj freshfluke. posted the same in the ni forum.
----------------------------------
today the unit arrived.

+ weight, size, this unit is not looking toyish
+ overall quality
+ button quality
+ buttons and knobs are lit
+ diversity e.g. in connectivity
+ .tsi from our native girl

- the filter knobs are located to close to each other, meaning you can't completely turn a knob from 100% to 0% without touching a neighbour, biggest K.O. from my point of view
- the filter section of the unit is not really compatible with traktor, because the filter section is mixed with rotaries and knobs
- knobs are not working precise enough in internal mixing mode
(meaning: e.g. you turn an eq knob to 50% and the setting in tsp is 93%)
therefor a usage in internal mode is not conceivable
- the crossfader is only sending one midi note, meaning there is no way to set on, off positions like it was possible with the vci
- the shift button on the unit is not sending a midi not at all and therefore completely useless for midi assingments
indeed the shift button not even toggles, meaning you have would have to hold the button pressed to handle deck c and d. a workaround using modifiers would be thinkable but is not the same
- mousepad is not working precise enough, even though i have tested several settings in the mouse system control and therefor worthless and not usable instead of the touchpad

will sent the unit back soon, and still use my vci :-(

cheers

if you want to use the shift key to switch deck A-C or B-D go in traktor preferences-controller manager, search the shift key and click on: type of controller(button) and interaction mode(direct), so when the shift key remains lit controls deck C and when it is off control deck A
sorry for my english

i guess this is a missunderstanding.
the problem is that the shift button is not sending a midi note at all!

pressing and holding the shift key just changes the midi notes of other buttons.
meaning that you have to press the shift key for the whole time of action.
this is not a taktor issue.

Think I found a simple fix to some of the sound issues people are having when they install because I was having it too.

Plug in your VMS4

INSTALL VDJ LE update your firmware even if you have pro installed like I did. Install the asio driver on the cd.

now do not uninstall anything at this point youre simply going to reinstall the ASIO driver again its gonna say something about the another version is found that is older, say yes and overwrite it. Open you VDJ select external mixer and either the VMS4 or ASIO as your sound and you should get sound from two separate channels... I tried this on two system after only getting sound from chan 2 coming in from both the R/L decks hope this helps with some of the problems. I called AM DJ and told em this ASIO driver may be the root of some of the evil so hopefully they'll look further into it
@chill: The shift button is set up so that you can hold it to produce an alternate command for any control on the VMS4.

If you do MIDI learn on traktor you'll notice that on most controls the channel number will change from 1 to 2 but the command will stay the same. So make sure in Traktor you do not set up OMNI mode.

It's interesting you complain about this on the VMS4 and say you want to go back to the VCI-300 which works the exact same way!

I'm not sure what the issue is with the crossfader it's a 0 to 127 controller no?

As far as the knobs they have a slightly different curve from Traktor. They still have 0 to 127 range controls but there is more action closer to the center of the knobs.
again:

i understand the functionality of the shift button 100% right.

one problem is that the shift button changes values of other knobs. wich is not the main problem. the main problem is that you have to hold the shift button for time of interaction. it has no toggle function from firmware site.

therefore it would be much more clever that the shift button is sending a midi note and so every user al least of traktor pro could programm their own modifier.

example when you want to start playback od deck c, you have to press shift + play, for any further deck handling you have to press and hold shift again.
so this is very very inconvinient.
the easiest solution for a further firmware update would be a toggle option. it would be much better if the shift button e.g. has a toggle option.

First check in your audio setup if you haven't assigned your channels to the same output.

check your midi mapping if both channels haven't been assigned to the same midi channels, sounds like it does in your case.

Is this the midi setting in Traktor (downloaded from the site)?

how did you figure this out? i'm having the same problem
I had that issue before, but when i downloaded freshfluke mapping, it haven't that probs... that's why i made my mapping with the base of freshfluke and ricardo mapping... who for me is the best... Some ppl told the vms4 is not for scratch, i don't really care i don't really want to scratch every day or other but i just want to make nice scratch transition with what all midi controllers with deck can do.
I think the build quality is a real issue. From start on I thought the knobs (rotaries) felt a bit 'wobbly'. They move a little, like they arent rocksolid mounted in the unit.

Now it turns out my Midilog 3 Gain knob sends out random data. I have the feeling this is related to the not so solid mounting: if I just touch the knob a little (not rotating it) it starts sending out data. Like there's some short circuit.

Until this happened, I was really happy with the unit (although the not really solid knobs) but now I have to change my views on it... How much, will depend on the support I will get now.

I'm having the same problems as @Sinpoet. No one has answered his question! I also had no sound coming from the VMS4 at the start(running VDJ LE) and now i got the sound to work(using VDJ PRO) but now i noticed that the cross fader doesn't work when i use it with the controller but functions properly when i use the mouse. Also the volume fader on the VMS4 doesn't function also when i use it on the controller(VMS4). ALL the controls work and function fine when i'm using the mouse to control it but when i try to use the cross fader, volume fader on the VMS4 to control them it won't work so doesn't the gain, treble, mid, bass. master, balance, booth knobs on midilogs 2 ,3 on the controller but all function and works properly when i use my mouse to control them. Jog wheels and effects, play, pause, cue, etc when i use it on the VMS4 controller seem to work fine. Seems like it's just the mixer bit that i can't control on the VMS4. Volume meter's working also. Looks like the mixer controls on the VMS4 is disabled or something(is this possible?)or probably need to re map??? Hope it's not broken cause it will cost me at least $140us to send it back to the US cause i'm from Australia. I've set the front panel of the VMS4 correctly to usb and 4 out etc. Even tried un-installing and re-installing VDJ LE! I'm currently using the trial period of VDJ PRO. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've already wasted $70 sending a CRAPPY DJ TECH IMIX RELOAD back to the US for a refund. Hope this isn't going to be the case with the VMS4 cause i got the Styleflip skin on and everything and it's looking AWESOMESmiler LOVING THE VMS4 but gotta get it to function properly. If this helps i'm using the VMS4 on my home pc running Windows XP with just speakers hooked up to the comp. ANY INFO FROM ANYONE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATEDSmiler

Also when i just run the VMS4 on VDJ LE there is no sound at all. When deck a is playing both the volume meters are working...shouldn't it only be one of the volume meters just like in the monitor not both of them. Also when i move the deck B volume fader(using the computer mouse) the meter on the VMS4 doesn't light up, BOTH OF THEM shouldn't it just be deck B's meter that goes off not both and when i do the same with deck A's volume fader NOTHING HAPPENS! None of the volume meters lights up or turns off when i move deck a's volume fader
