Hey All,
I am just doing a review of the TouchOSC app for the ipod touch. This app can be used on either an iphone, ipod, or the ipad. It is a really awesome app that lets you control American DJ myDMX via wifi-midi.
This app will let you control your lights via wifi connection either through a router or turning your laptop/pc into an adhoc network.
Basically it turns your ipod, iphone, or ipad into a remote control for American DJ myDMX. It has virtual knobs, faders, buttons, x/y pad for pan tilt movement.
I made a custom interface for playback right now. Working on making one for setting scenes up(more faders).

Here are a couple pictures of the custom interface I made for playback on myDMX.
This is the fader screen with toggle buttons

This is the 1st Playback button screen. You can see different color buttons say for blackout(grey), red, green, blue, yellow, orange, purple. Could be used for easy color scenes or looks e.g. Red, Blue Green, etc.

This is the 2nd Playback button screen

This last picture shows an x/y pad for moving light control with some toggle buttons (For scenes you have gobos/colors set to buttons)

While I was playing with this I was thinking big. Say you are doing a gig and need to go away from your computer for a little while(bathroom, talking to the crowd, yelling at a worker, whatever), and you have no one to run lights, take this with you and bam instant show control via wifi-midi.

Sounds good, but when it comes to show times, I'm at the console or whatever needs to be done.

If I gotta yell at someone during showntime, it's "you're fired" and then back to the show.

I think for the DJ though, having this as an option, will help already busy hands stay more on where they need to be. I will definately check this out because if it can be used with MyDMX, it can be used with other software offerings, like maybe Compu Show.
Chris that is exactly what I thought as well. By the way Jingles does the Compu Live, or Compu Show have scene mixing? For example first scene is active then click another scene and both are simultaneously working together.
Because if it does I can see an extremely great opportunity for this set up.

On a side note for this set up to work on say Vista. I have it set as follows TouchOSC on Ipod, Pd-extended catching wifi-midi signals from TouchOSC then routing out to LoopBe1, LoopBe1 routing the internal midi(like a virtual midi bridge between programs) to midi-ox, midi-ox rerouting to the midi mapper protocol on windows, then from the midi mapper in windows to myDMX.

Here is a link to the tools I downloaded for it to work.
MIDI Tools package
It will take some configuring to do but it was worth while.
For me I think of it as a Lighting Designer's Focusing Remote for while you are away from the lighting desk. Something that is extremely valuable to have when you are by yourself sometimes.

EDIT: I just did some testing on the x/y pad it seems it may need a lot of work. I would not recommend using it right now.

Hey k sound. Compu live and show sort of have that. Basically day you had several pages. Each page was a different type say movers LEDs pars etc. I can play 1 scene per fixture page back at a time or one master scene with switches from any page.
Hope that answers your questions.

Are you the developer of this app?
Sincerely,
I am not the developer I am just a user that saw great potential for myDMX control. Just from videos I saw on youtube. I tried it out and I have to say this app will meet a lot of those control isuue questions that popped up from other users.

What I did was probably wrong and I apologize. Though nothing I linked to was illegal. I just wanted to give an alternative to control issues people may have with myDMX.
I was thinking the same thing in regards to this being a good solo assistance tool. I have this one scene we gotta redo the aim each show due to placement/blocking issues(it's close but not quite), and while I don't mind relying on someone else, this would help me out a lot. Another option is I could just put a couple of DMX cables off the dongle and walk out there, but I really don't like moving gear once set.

Almost all of us using third party controllers for MyDMX have done some linking to external sites. I'm not 100% sure if I have or not, but I have certainly recommended the Korg nanoKONTROL, and have worked with some other non-ADJ/Elation gear. I'm actually interested in the MIDICON as well.

With my iPhone, the more I can do with it, the better it helps me out at shows, the better I say. If something like this can help, then all the better. I use it for pre-event music playback control(while my Macbook Pro is running as a Mac and my Protools interface is hooked up). I use it as a remote control for my media player. We use it as a message system during events via texting. Since I bring a wireless router to each show these days to support some of these features, having one more option available sure is appealing.

I wouldn't use this app during show time. I'd need my nanoKONTROL for show time. But pre-show set, yeah, it's got LOTS of possibilities.
well from what I tested and used it for it worked. So I decided to recommend it to others. Don't get me wrong I love my KORG nanoKONTROL, but this can surpass it I think. The thins I have tested it on was just scene switching for now. Set up like a bunch of scenes and it works for playback control of scenes. Right now I use that push button grid screen(photo 2) to call scenes I made. It has 20 buttons on one page. I probably could have fit more if I made smaller buttons on my layout. But it was a test to see if it worked and it did. I could make a layout that has four pages of 10-12 faders each page. Or I can make a button layout that has 20-30 buttons per page. Or I can make a combination of both.
That's one of the good things about MyDMX, is the fact that is does incorporate MIDI into it. There's no one "best" controller for MyDMX. To each their own. Whatever is best is whatever works best ofr the end-user.

Personally, I think whenever someone finds something that does or doesn't work with MyDMX, we should try to post successes and failures, no matter how large or small. This software solution that involves the iPhone sounds promising, so let's hope the same thing comes to Droid as well. I prefer the iPhone, that's all I will say.

Will this replace the Korg nanoKONTROL for me? Nope. Come show time, I want a tactile interface, and the only way to do that is with a physical device, no 2 ways around that. That is based on how I work and need to work. I feel comfortable touching something tangible and the smooth touch surface of my iPhone doesn't give me that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Even so, your suggestion that I agree with being just one of many great uses for your solution is the ability to leave the operator position and help set-up the show. For me, that's ideal because on the big show I got to make adjustments for, I can't see crap from my position. So, being able to move around, definately a plus!

But that doens't need to be all it could be used for. For me, come show time, I'm at the FOH/mix position/starship command(whatever you want to call it), so I ain't going nowhere, but that's fine. Your idea of leaving the operator position and making scene changes or tweaks on the fly during show time, that's really cool. I can see a good use for this on my twice a year rave letting the MC "feel the love" and make changes from where-ever he is roaming around.

Also, while many physical MIDI units often have many limitations due to design, tbhis product gets around many of those limitations by being a totally soft product.

The main downside after the initial hassle of getting things working, is the fact that you may have TOO many options to work with.

I'd say anything that works should get some positive space here. Once my schedule calms down a bit, I am interested in checking into this.
Hello fellow lighting friends. My name is Footbag and I am new to this forum. I have used the touch osc app for my iphone with resolume. ( A program for projectors and all that fun stuff) and I had no idea you could set it up with MyDMX. Do you think you can tell us how you got it to work? and maybe post a download link for your custom layout.
Well step 1 download the midi tools package I made. Here is another link.
MIDI Tools Package
Setup:
PC running Windows(I have Vista 32bit)
First off you will need to install pd extender. After installing PD Extender install LoopBe1.
After installing LoopBe1 install MIDI-OX.
Set your wifi up make sure you get the address for your computer that way you can put it in TouchOSC.

In the package should have some of the basic maps for TouchOSC. If not hit me up again and I will post a link to my custom one I made(which is still a work in progress). Here is a picture.
