Strobes and DMX

I don't have a lot of DMX experience but use it to drive par cans and color changers for a rock band.

We want to replace our puny strobe with something a little more exciting and have in mind 6 strobes.

My question is what is the best way to control them? A dedicated strobe controller or can we use an old DMX Operator we have spare?

If we use DMX, does the DMX desk signal every strobe flash? If not, will the strobes remain perfectly synchronized after running for a period of time, even if on different channels?

DMX strobes vary the speed to the dmx value SO theoretically if you gave the same value for different channels they would remain the same. I have found in the real world, when running the strobes for more than 10 seconds they sometime vary.

What is the advantage of using a strobe controller rather than any DMX kit?
