if one on the gears is messed up in the motor it will go off track. if you reset the Xtreme and it goes back on track it is most likely the motor. if it doesn't straighten up it could be the chip. either way call support at 800 322 6337 from 8 to 5 M-F. they can help you out more.
If you do not open the case, you cannot harm the light by static discharge from your hands/body. If you open the case and handle the chips/electronic components inside the box, you can potentially cause damage by static discharge.
Touching a magnet will do no more good than Voodoo or dancing on your head. (VERY, VERY stupid post!!!!!!!!)
A grounded plug makes no difference. A proper case will not allow static to harm internal components regardless of whether it is plugged in or not.
Take it from an electrical engineer who has worked static discharge issues, don't open the case - no static issues. The problems you are seeing with your unit are MUCH more likely due to wear, broken parts, etc or - remotely - a voltage spike (lightning, not static!!!!).
To rid your body of static, touch a cold water pipe rather than a magnet.
The pipe runs from under the sink, through the walls,
and into the ground, so it's a great ground.
Then your only problem is how to avoid building up more static on
your way from the bathroom to wherever you are working on
your light. The best practice if you need to mess with a circuit
board is to use a wrist strap with a wire that runs from you
to a good ground. That way you STAY static free.
