I understand lighting vs audio but was trying to find a way that one pc could run my dmx & ots dj software. did not know if there was any way to not use two computers (which i do now). Just trying to consolidate using multiple devices. please throw some ideas if you have any.
thank you
Well, the audio is most likely tied to some other issue that involves electrical, and without more information, I'm not going to speculate. I will say using a headphone OUT from the laptop is BAD unless you're using an active direct box on each channel.

If you're not too concerned about syncing lights to audio(and don't), then you can get away just fine with MyDMX running in the background, it will work just fine if you're using a zippy laptop and a firewire drive for your media.

The audio hum issue is NOT tied to the lighting software. Those are two sepparate issues, and since it's possible you're on different breakers and maybe even different panels, that could be a major cause of the problem. An Ebtech Hum eliminator can be a good tool to addresss this issue if we're at LINE LEVEL.
Well, regardless how you look at it, there should be a real audio interface(as in a line out), NOT a headphone OUT.

Not going to argue the direct box. But if you're running small, a hum eliminator would be the way to go. A DI(stereo DI perhaps) might be over-kill depending on the situation. Not saying it's a BAD option. All elements have to be weighed. I usually reach for the hum eliminator when I'm working at line level(OUTS from the desk). For incoming, unless I'm doing stuff small, the DI is my initial choice since I'm going to go from high to low impedence anyways whenever possible.
