Some objective advice

Alright, let me lay this out as plain and simple as I can. I need to make a final decision on a setup and I've finally narrowed it down to 2. The first is 2 cdi 500's and a QD-5 mixer. The second is (please forgive me) 1 denon dn-s5000 and a ****** dxm06 or PPD01 mixer. I know this is an American Audio forum, but the moderators here seem to be fair and honest in their replies. Take this into consideration before you reply: I'm a rookie to this art/trade, but plan on persevering until I learn, therefore, I need the equipment that will best suit me for the long haul. Just from what I've studied so far, I realize that this is not a cheap hobby or trade. So this is a big decision for me. The reason I'm even considering the 5000 is because of the larger platter. I don't know if that is important to a beginner like myself, but I know I want to be primarily a scratch dj. I've been doing Christian rap for the last 5 yrs and now it's time to spice it up with some scratchin'. Please don't tell me to go to guitar center and try them out for myself--I've already done that!! I'm either too undecided for my own good, or I may not have enough working knowledge of the units. Anyway, I'm fed up with my indecision. I've gone onto other forums and asked this same question, but all I get is a bunch of amateurs bashing each others products. I know I've been long-winded, but it's important to me. BTW, I think it's cool that a travelling, professional dj (dj skilz) takes time to answer our questions. That is truly cool. Stay humble.

Actually you've bluntly made it clear to everybody here what you want to do, and what your plans are. So if i were you, i'll go with the product ( Gear ) that is gonna be less more expensive for you, and then learn everything you can from using that type of equipment. Then when you get to the point where you want to be, you can always save up and open up your options to the newer gear that will be abailable to you at that time. If you just want to learn how to scratch then it's best to just get simple video's, or watch DMC video's, or any type of video that will allow you to listen, and observe how the scratches are executed. Thats the best advice i can give you from my end. Wink

A couple of my setups..... And both the s5000's, and the PS2's both have their own advantages and disadvantages over each other. It depends on my mood, and the situation. But to tell the truth I use my PS2 console more than the s5000 console. Maybe it's because I had the PS1's first and became accustomed to them. But really I just find them easier to use (ie it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to use the features.) The first time I tried the alpha-track the only way to get them out was for me to turn off the power and reset it. Red Face

the next morning after a gig?

I actually had one of those D'nen Dual CD/ 1200s/ MP24 mixer coffins--woooweee was it heavy. Records in crates, CD's, lights, MR Series speakers, B36's----owww!!!! Mah back!!!! I had to sell the stuff or suffer back pain.

Now I (pardon me) have this mickey mouse system that doesnt weigh much. In fact I wonder if American Dj still makes that plastic 15 x 2 (EV clone) triangle speaker cabinets.

Anyway STEVIE, cool setups--watch yer back

My setup looks something like that, I have a gig soon that requires a helper to get up and down stairs but I like the setup, I didn't want to waste a good coffin when I switch from tt to velocity, it actually comes in handy I have my mic mixer on the left as well as the mic rec. for the wireless, in the middle it the velocity controler, and on the right is the QD-5

He guys, there is no TT in the coffin. Look again, it's a PowerDrive sitting on the shelf in my studio. The coffins only contain 2 tabletop CD's, a dual deck backup, mixer, eq, mic, and the one has a lightweight amp, which does raise the qeight a bit. I was only showing BooBerry that although we love AA, we do sometimes use others as well, and therefore can honestly give opinions, and comparissons.

I'd tend to agree on the s5000. They are very nice, but I don't think they're as user friendly as the PS2/CDI-500s.

I was in the same boat, Boo Berry, when I first started. In the end, it came down to price for the features. Guess who won? Smiler

Oh, and Stevie Ray, I thought you looked better with the mohawk and the goatee. Big Grin

dj stevie ray and billabong, thanks for the input as well. I think I am probably going to go with the cdi's because I'm sure they are more user freindly. I like the denon, but it looks like a lot of the buttons have multiple uses and being a beginner, I should probably start out slow. What about the Q-D5 mixer? Is it a solid unit? Thanks

Trust me I am not going to tell you what to get since everyonelse kinda stared you towards ADJ. Let me just clear somthing up. The DN-S5000s are not difficult to use: procedures are extremely simple in my opinion. Do not let buttons fool you.

The 5000s are also loaded with features hence the reason why so much users fall in love with it and most importantly it is a machine that performs well. For it's price currently, you cannnot go wrong. I have owned them for about 5 months and encountered no problems. It's to my advantage I chose it, they can be updated via software in case any major bugs/issues surface which is in my opinion a plus for the user.

The ADJ appears to be great players also everyone on here seems to be satisfied. I never had extensive use with the player but from many of djSkillz videos I have seen they do perform. Somehow in the end it always comes down to the dj and as Skillz mentioned start off with something not too expensive that you can develop your Skills on and save money for some of the more advanced models in the future. This usually would not be my suggestion but hey I can make exceptions. Peace and to each his own.

go for a dual cd playing machine.... don't count on the auto mix mode of any single CD playing machine. they will reduce your custom-styling talents. then in the future you will be the slave of your machiine instead of the user ruling as the master.

i am a current user of d3n0n 2000F, NewMarC cdn-25, 2 x ps1, and dcdpro-1000.

i assume that you are talking to me dj skilz, my name is actually Joer. ....

how's the 1000s?.... well every gig is "eat my scratch and eat my loops night".

i am always using the "blinkin yellow lit scratch" mode. and its super versatile, i can use on techno and hip hop songs.

i am now creating my "intro" show off stuffs using same 3 flash samples on both decks of the CD.

i created another post that discusses inputs for maybe new breeds of dcdpro-1000 or its children.
