I dont have much experience with scanners so I'm interested if they have any advantages over moving heads. They seem much more efficinet to me - a moving mirror instead of a constantly shifting center of gravity.
i have always liked moving heads alot better. they do cost alot more but from my experience they look so much better. If the lights are for smaller gigs it is best to go with scanners because you wont need something as big as a moving head for a small room
The biggest diference comes from application usage. For most mobile DJ setups, you will find the DJ at one end of the floor, with his portable lighting trussing. Perfect for the scanner because it doesn't need to project behind its center point.
A moving head in a fixed installation would be mounted more towards the centr of the floor or 1/3 the distance between the edges of the floor, and anywhere in between.
Set the scanners at the corners of a room, the moving heads toward the center.
Additionally, Scanners and Moving Heads work best in multiples. Evaluate your cost and the effects you will receive for the money. You may be able to get three scanners for the same cost of two moving head fixtures.
