RGB 3C Controller with PRO 64 LED RC

I recently purchased the "ADJ RGB 3C Controller" to control my collection of "ADJ PRO 64 LED RCs"

I connected one light up via XLR last night and selected dmx channel 1 on the "PRO 64" The controller worked but the behaviour was erratic to say the least.

For example the R fader changed the colours randomly and the color select buttons did not work. Am i missing something obvious here?
