I have to respectfully disagree with some CONDITIONS.
I definately agree with what you're saying, but that's not a 100 accurate statement.
Are halogen bulbs considered filaments? They appear to be to me, but hey, I'm not as up on the lighting technology you are.
ADJ manuals state in them which fixtures can and can not be used with dimmer packs. SerraAva mentions switching packs and some dimmer packs have this built in. DO NOT ASSUME that switching capability is built it. I have some older ADJ DP-DMX20Ls, and these models DO NOT support switching. The newer ones, mostly branded Elation, DO support switching if you set it on a per channel basis.
Hi-Tech FX should NOT be plugged into a dimmer unless the channel is set to switching. Why? Well, the bulb will probably be fine, but you're going to damage the electronics that run the fixture. All or nothing, OK?
Also, anything that has a DMX in/out on it should most likely NEVER be plugged into a dimmer OR a switcher.
Ideally, dimmers are intended for mainly ParCan and ParCan-type fixtures, as well as a few others. This EXCLUDES ParCans that have DMX capabilities or some sort of external control.
Switchers seem more oriented for non-intelligent lighting, such as what ADJ calles "hi-tech FX". In my case, I have many dancing type lights that fall under this category. Putting them onto switcher packs gives me control over them. The MyDMX profiles DO NOT exist for most of these lights. Let's face it, there is no proper way to adequately visualize the Mystic in MyDMX. For those, I have opted to use a generic. I'm more concerned about on/off than "what is it doing".
While you CAN use dimmers on hi-tech FX, you have to take care that you go ALL THE WAY ON or ALL THE WAY OFF.
As always, READ manuals.
Like you, I also am making tons of scenes for my event on the 25th. I really need to work on my environment today, that's my main objective. Then back to scene design. It's gonna be a LONG day!!!
