Misty, I have about 12 of them and when I first got them there were a few flaws (not quite as bad as what you had) but as with everything that gets sent via oops (UPS) or even fed axe. Getting bounced around isn't really healthy for electronics and the weak points get weaker until bust.
As far as the reliability of the Pocket Scans I use them everyday and they go mobile with me. I've been using them for about a year now and they had served me extremely well!
