Hi Guys,

I am considering getting a pocketscan because they can be found really cheap...

HOWEVER...

I would like to have honest feelings from owners... I know this is an ADJ forum, but I would really like to see some honesty... it is already bad enough you cant put in others manufacturers names (*RANT* personally, I would feel that not allowing people to write names of other mfgs on my site was putting down my products, if I was the owner of ADJ!! What are they afraid of? arent there lights good? I think so, so why are they so afraid?! *RANT END*)

I would like to know about the laser effect, does it look roughly acceptable in fog? Is it possible to turn the laser on/off in any mode? Is it possible to strobe the laser, or will that be up to the controller?

Are the motors jumpy? (Like the Mighty) (requiring manual speed adjustment to reduce this)

Any other things you guys really like/really dislike?

Is there dimming possible?

Is it possible to do split-colors?

I realize I am making many questions which would be about advanced expensive features, but I would like to know whether I should get a PScan or wait a bit and get a Moving Head later... ( moving would cost like 4 times the ps!)

I own a Pocket Scan system. To answer your questions, the pocket scan does have split colors (2 colors), is not dimmable, and the laser is able to do more of a blanking look than a strobing look. The laser is only decent if the room is very dark and there is decent amount of fog in the air. The good things about this light are that the motors are of fairly high quality, separate color and gobo wheels, and its compact size which is perfect for mobile. The things I dont like abt the pocket scan are it is only 100W and is easily drowned out by other units and the strobe is only the gate on the light and not a separate shutter. Overall, its a pretty nice light with a good amount of colors and gobos however I wouldn't buy it just because it has a laser mounted on it. Hope this helps!!
in my answer...

  • does it look roughly acceptable in fog? yes it is a very visible laser, and it has a small strobe effect. and it can be over controlled on the DMX board
  • Are the motors jumpy? no not at all. unless it is in high sound avtive speed.
  • Any other things you guys really like/really dislike? not really it is a very great light.
  • Is there dimming possible? not one bit at all.
  • are their split-colors every color can be splitted. except the two colors of white.
roy if you want someone to tell you they look good and **** like that, does it matter what the person has experience with other then a adj product?

i mean you are asking a question to people who might not have any other knowledge of any other companies other then adj?

so what are you expecting to get off that answer?
you should just ask a adj employee cause its going to be the same answer.

really i like the pocket scan for a bedroom setup. thats my answer
I can't say I agree with you 100% on that Billy,(bedroom light) I have seen the Pocket's used in catering facilities with decent sized dance floors, as well as bars that don't have a large budget for intelligent lighting fixtures and they more than handled the task. Let's face it we're talking affordable lighting fixtures, which for mobile work, and small bars and clubs perform very well.

Everyone is entitled to thier own opinions, I am familiar with many brands of lights, of things I've used personally, the omni rotoscan, which is a nice durable light, but very heavy and boring when compared to the pocket, does that make the pocket better??? No, but if YOU like the pocket then YOU should use it.

Roy, as I have said on many occasions, if you feel you would like to discuss the policy of the board please email an administrator, and handle the matter as a professional. To the best of my knowledge it's an automatic sensor that blocks out yes the names of our competitors, reason being, FREE ADVERTISING, think of it like this, would you advertise for a competitive dj company in your backyard? If you would, I'm surprised, but going foward please direct all questions to an administrator.
I feel that I put forth precise questions in helping me judge the Pocket, and I have.

As for competition or no competition, free ads or not, I will withold myself from further commentary. I am a frequent in several other boards that dont have this policy, and I feel that because we have so many loyal ADJ users in this forum it would not be negative to allow users to mention other brands products.

And the admins are so present that advertising posts would be torn down in no time at all! But I wont get into it...
Roy, that is why such places like pro dj exist, where they are not tied to a manufacturer directly, any company that runs a web forum with it's own name on it, that plans to run with no legal concourse will run itself professionally. And if that means not allowing the possibility of false information or derogatory comments about other manufacturers gear, so be it.

As I had a discussion with Ken Heath during the mobile beat show, he's a moderator and a great guy from prodj, he gave me a little bit of insight, that I never really thought of before, you chose to register here, and obey by the rules set forth by the board upon your registration, it's not a privlige or a right to come here, it's by your own willingness. And if you choose to come here, and have registered, you shouldn't have a problem with the rules set forth by the board.
ok roy I feel You deserve this buddy. I have in my inventory some amazing lights which include, 812's mx-4s, mac 250s, and that is just some of the intells. I love the denmark baised company which is no surpise!

but what i think of the pocketscan is this.

the pocket scan is a mean and some what cute light.

great colors great gobos laser toyz and at only 10lbs this is a mini of lighting.

what i dont like about the light?
well people complain of the low output, but tell you the truth to me it looks like a 100watt lamp, besides the lamp life makes up for it in the long run.

one thing i have noticed is there seems to be a very small degree of light output, like some lights have a 16, well it looks like this light has a 2.

maybe someone else can help with this.

but what makes me go out and buy a light is not what you asked about, its not what everyone thinks about it, its the company and how hard do they back there light up? how well is it built?

rent a pocket scan and a mx 4 take the outside cover off both and compare.
that will make you buy the one you would want to invest ur hard earned cash into!
Billy D, it seems fairly obvious that you know little of what you speak. The Pockets INDEED have a 100 watt bulb, but the gobos are smaller which make the light look MUCH brighter. Bedroom light??? C'mon, the Pocket Scan is one of ADJ's most popular units and for a very good reason. THEY ROCK!! No, I am not an Admin. or a MOD in this forum but I do know quality when I see it. Most mobile DeeJays do not require the extreme output that you feel is necessary. Why blind your guests? Why use a light that is brighter than you need? -Ken-

Well for that price, i wouldn't expect them to be The best lights... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

you guyz shuld really look at things from both angles before passing judgements.
I do agree with u on the fact that for high tech and awesome effects i would prefer to use other lights. But then again the pocket scan was created for a specific dj class, which wants the best quality for the lowest price range. Roll Eyes
i used to run a pocket system but the lights were drowned out by larger center effects. went to mighty's and am going to switch to the concept2's here pretty soon, i was not that impressed with the laser myself, but they are great lights and was awsome for my 1st set of intels
"""Billy D, hey I'm chill, but I GOTTA know just what goes on in your bedroom that would require intells? Must be some wild nights!! -Ken- """

Well ken lets just say you would $hit in your pants if you even seen one of the videos, let alone the real thing!

I'm not bragging about my room or my inventory.
I use my bedroom as a practice center or a studio for my lighting. thats where I started and thats where ill end my run in lighting.

as far as the setup goes --- it depends on what i'm doing or working on at the time.
now is a pretty small setup of 8mx-4s 4mac250's, 2 atomics. this is because i am programming for a club install so its there lights and everything, not mine!

Also I have 6-812's, 4-destroyers, 1-wizard, 2-acrobats(but am selling them cause i dont like them at all)

and no my bedroom is not big or anything

I had 2-autospots in there last week, now those are some cute lights! very nice.

i am playing with some ideas useing 8 groove wheels - but that is not done yet

I also am upgradeing 4 galatic stars with green lasers too.

like i said I use my bedroom as a studio for lighting.
every week the shows differes,
any way back to my point with the pocketscan.

in a bedroom its hard to find a intell small enough with loads of effects to sort of fit the small room.

the pocket scan is a beast and is one bad mofo for its size!

so by me saying ill take it for my bedroom, is a good thing cause a light can make its way in my bedroom, but it probably not stay in for long cause of myself getting board of it fast.

the pocket how ever will not only stay in there, i can play with that thing forever!
to me its a godsent toy, and when i say toy i mean something i can play with and play and play.

thats why i have so many lights cause they are toys to me, i like playing with them and i like tryin different lights all the time.

the only reason i do "jobs" or "gigs" or whatever is so i can buy more toys!!

the only reason why Enzo Ferrari sold cars is so he could pay for the raceing team, thats all!
now look at ferrari!, Enzo loved raceing his machines so much, that the only way he could do it and pay the bills was to start makeing cars for the public to buy, thats why we have ferrari now!.

the same goes with me, if i cant buy more toys i wouldnt work in the business at all!
