One Effect for Garage Band?

I'm Christmas shopping for a kid who has a "band" with some of his friends. They'll probably never play anywhere other than his garage, but I'd like something that would work at a house-party or add some edge at a battle of the bands just in case. Can you guys please recommend a small effect that can just be plugged into the wall without controllers or whatever and will look good pointed at a stage? Thank you.

the color sweep looks pretty good and is cheap. it gives kinda i want to say a classic 80's look but it is def. a rock type light to me! check it out here ADJ COLOR SWEEP my two watts! p.s. do they need just an effect or do they need light to be seen? jingles out!
