great for a centerpiece! this light covers a huge area with multiple lights. If you are like me, you count on the sound active mode to do its thing while you mix music ( too busy on the decks to pay attention to the dmx).its great, just a few things i am not crazy about.

the beams are really thin and this might not be as great with a low ceiling, and another thing is that it could be just a tad bit brighter. other than that, it's a great light.

not sure if this answers any questions you might have, but if not, be more specific and perhaps i might be able to answer any question you might have.
What DMX mode are you using?

I notice there is no X or Y fine control, so we're talking 8-bit movement only. But I'm thinking that dependent on the DMX mode you're using, there are options for pan/tilt speed. I'm thinking that perhaps if the pan/tilt speed is slowed down, that might make your movements appear to be smoother?

I think what you're describing is how it appears that things sort of jump to their next position or jump between positions.

I don't have a Nucleus. Doesn't fit within the type of work I do. Sure does look neat.
Guys,

I had just taken it out of the box and fired it up on show mode, no DMX. I tried the different programs and sound active. The mirror movement was not smooth at all. The mirror makes tiny jumps to all the different positions in pan and tilt which makes it very rough, like a second hand on a clock. I have not tried it in DMX mode but will. I hope this makes a lot smoother!

Thanks,
Ric
This is my impression using inexpensive lights for comparison:

I have 4 scanner-type "high tech FX". All are ADJ. Electra, Rover, Reflex, Barrel Flex. Again, inexpensive non-DMX fixtures, great for parties and stuff like that. I notice for the most part their movements are a bit "chunky", but sometimes smooth. It's probably due to using a less refined motor, coupled with sound active. So, no doubt sometimes it mixes up the speed to keep it interesting. And this quad together does just that, it is kept interesting. So, no complaints.

I notice a lot of stuff in stand alone mode tends to make large movements, or perhaps "chunky" might be a better term, mostly because you chose it. This is my opinion, take it as you will. I find those who want to do things in show mode aren't really as concerned with those sort of things, they just want something cool, bright, hands off and easy, so they probably aren't too concerned with chunky motor movements. Chances are, the crowd doesn't care either(but that would be regardless of anything else, the crowd typically won't care anyways).

When I use the above mentioned lights, my crowds love it and I could care less how chunky the movements are. These lights do exactly what I want and need the to do, which is sprinkle light over a sizable area for dances and raves.

So, I'm thinking and assuming, and perhaps assuming wrong, that by slowing down the pan/tilt in DMX, it might address this issue somewhat. I don't think you can expect perfection, but I think you'll be able to find you can be more than happy with it.

I don't think your observation is invalid in the least. Try DMX mode and see if it helps any.
If it was me, I'd fire it up tonight and check it out. I don't like to run into surprises ast shows. But that's just me.

I mean, I'm not trying to salvage a sale. I have no stake in this. I'm more into customer satisfaction, but again, I'm not into sales, and I don't work for ADJ or Elation so again, ain't gonna hurt my feelings none. But I'd rather give a light an extended test at the home while figuring out if it's right or not. And maybe it isn't the right light for you.

I'm fortunate that I have sufficient gear to test with, as well as for production. I think it would look a bit silly setting up a truss and hanging lights for testing, but if I had to, I would!

I can say this, for how I'd want to use this light, the choppy motor movement most likely wouldn't be an issue for me or my clients. if I were to get this, it would be for raves, where they won't care about this sort of thing.

I'm gonna go check out the Nucleus video. I'm nosy now!
Just following up:

The video says it's equiped with 3.6" stepper motor for extremely smooth scanning(0:45), and I saw what I would consider smooth movement, so maybe it's just a matter of slowing down the pan and tilt will address this problem.

As I said, I don't like surprises at shows or on show day. I'd want to play with this ahead of time.

Based on what I see, a pair of these would kick some ass! I can see uses for this outside raves. But I'd have to learn some new ideas. I can definately see why Jingles would like this one. Still, neat fixture. But, I'm not spending money on any right now. I have some other lighting priorities.

Right now I'm in a maintenance mode, so I'm setting up gear of all kinds and running it through it's paces these days to see what is and what isn't working. Most fixes are just simple battery swaps or other inexpensive things.
So I did the gig last night and am happy to report the Nucleus LED on DMX was smooth as glass! It was plenty bright for my small applications and performed well. Jingles really saved my butt by sending me the 4 channel profile as I failed to check the ADJ libray on MyDMX prior to the show (Yes Chris...lesson learned!)and it was no where to be found. Now I just need the 22 channel profile and I will be all set.

Thanks again Jingles, I really do appreciate your help!

Thanks for the update on the Nucleus. Sounds like this would be a great fixture for me to add into my inventory when the situation arises. Right now my focus is on other bits of lighting gear. However, you just put the Nucleus on my gear-watch radar.

After doing this stuff for 28 years, you learn to plan ahead and test stuff ahead of time. Now that we add software into our chaos, now we have to deal with drivers, plug-ins, authorizers and profiles.

Bottom line is I'm glad to hear that your gig went went AND the fixture did perform as you needd it to.
