hi, this is quite a long story, i believe my mydmx interface is broken.

on thursday, i first installed mydmx, first some minor issues regarding a broken usb hub, causing the inerface to startup in demo mode. after this was fixed, everything worked great. added the fixtures in my universer, set all the dip-switches to their address, ... basicly getting things going.

at first, fiddling around with some faders and stuff, the software responded slow at first, but when everything was 'loaded', all was normal. ok, enough for thursday. saved everything and shut off the system.

friday, booted pc, opened my show and started programming. easy at first, a bit more complicated in the end, i was getting the hang of things Smiler this is the greatest piece of software for DMX N00bs like me Smiler
enough for friday, i forgot to save at the end, causing me to lose most of my scenes, but OK, my own fault Smiler

saturday then ... mydmx refused to start in USB Mode. i changed usb ports, i changed usb cable, ... tried it all. i was stuck in demo mode. when trying to open in demo mode, my show worked great btw.

i figured out that mydmx was starting up in usb mode only after i have freshly rebooted my system. but then, once opened in usb mode, everything crashed. my show wouldn't open, i was unable to create a new one, ... finally figured out a way to open my existing show in usb mode, but that also caused to crash my system ...

i reinstalled mymdx, i tried EVERYTHING .. the only thing i can think of, is that my interface is broken. the software is installed on a BRANDNEW pc, windows xp installed ..

Take your MyDMX dongle off the USB hub. MyDMX doesn't seem to like working with anything hanging off a USB hub. My testing with a powered USB hub, MyDMX dongle, and USB-MIDI devices(and a USB MIDI interface) supported this statemetn. I am not saying it will be 100% accurate, but in my testing, anything hanging off a USB hub did not work with MyDMX.

Also, please boot with the dongle unplugged. After bootup and optional login(depends how you do things). Once you're all started up and good to go, then plug in the dongle. Wait for the happy sounds. Then launch MyDMX.

Make sure your MyDMX is the latest from the web site.

If re-installing: Uninstall, Reboot. Re-install. Reboot. Plug in dongle, see if recognized. Hopefully yes.

Also, when plugging in, make sure you do things in this order:
Set up all your lights, connect all your DMX cabling. Plug in your DMX cabling to the dongle. Plug in the dongle to the computer.

Also, if you can afford to do so, please consider purchasing an Elation optobranch/4. It will really help protect you further. I realize this might not be an option right now for you.

Try those ideas. Please report back.
hi chris, thanks for your input.

* USB Hub, i've tried every single port on the usb hub, as well as every usb port on my motherboard. that didn't do anything different.

* MyDMX Software is the latest from the website.

* elation optobranch .. i already have something similar (not elation however, it's a dmx splitter, 1 in, 2 out.)

i will try booting with the dongle unplugged, and your method of uninstalling & installing tomorrow morning, will report back Wink

i have a cocktailbar in Belgium, so all the fixtures are installed and cables are connected. that's not the problem. i replaced a hardware dmx-panel with the MyDMX interface for ease-of-use purposes.

regards

Jan
Well, the OptoBranch/4 is more than just a splitter, but perhaps your splitter serves similar protection purposes.

First, definately AVOID the hub for the time being, they are KNOWN issues. Plus, you need to use a POWERED hub(plugs into power) regardless. You could have starved the dongle for power, but chances are extremely low you did that and thus case additional damage.

Are you using DMX cabling? Although we're troubleshooing before that is an issue. We got to get the dongle behaving first.

What revision of XP are you running? Have you run all your Windows updates? Are you at Service Pack 3?

It is possible the hardware is damaged, but we need to step further. Try other devices(like a USB thumbdrive) into the USB ports. If that comes up, your USB ports are fine. I don't think that's the issue anyways.

You're trying really hard to do this the right way. The good news is that your troubleshooting should take less time, regardless if the outcome is good or bad.
Glad I could help and happy to know you're working again.

If you ever get a chance, post some show pictures so we can see what you're doing. I'm going to be taking lots of photos at my shows that I do a lot of lights at so Jingles and Serra Ava can have a good laugh(or puke) at my expense. They'll have to wait until after February 27th though!
You don't want MyDMX to run in the background, but I see where you're going with that statement. Remember, UNLESS MyDMX is in the foreground, it will NOT respond to MIDI or other commands.

Ideally, put MyDMX on the lesser powerful machine. DAW, virtual instrument, pre-recorded track playback all take more horsepower than DMX or even MIDI.
