I use MyDMX for live shows and for the most part it works great.

My shows are for a progressive heavy metal band and I've programmed and choreographed the lights to all of their songs one scene at a time. There are quite a few scenes to every song and I've had to program two files for each show because you are limited to the number of scenes in each file.

My smallest headache was for shorter sets where the song order changed from show to show. I have to move the scenes one at a time up and down the list until the song is reordered.

My biggest headache is their show keeps growing and changing and I cannont move an already programmed song from one show to another. It's finally reached a point where I don't know how I'm going to put the next show together. The songs are in a completely different order and saved in 4 different "Set" files, not to mention the 2 new songs I've got to program.

If anyone knows how I might copy scenes from one file to another, I'd be eternally greatful.

Try this idea:
As you know, scenes can contain many, many steps. Perhaps you can consolidate all your scenes for one song into one "mega scene" and see how that works. You can copy/paste the data in. It's not exactly graceful but it CAN be done.

Otherwise, loading a new universe/showfile per song sucks real fast.
Thanks Chris,

I thought of your idea but the problem with live performances concern speed and timing. I actually bump the scenes with my mouse so I can stay in synch with whatever mood they're playing in that night (usually much faster than recordings or practice). One mega scene won't allow me to "control" the lights.

And ... last night I also thought of the one song per file and you're right ... that mega sucks. Everytime I add a fixture, I have to set it up in each file. My biggest concern is that MyDmx freezes in the middle of a file change. I've had problems with this before at practice. I think this may be my best bet because I've boosted my ram to 4 meg and turn off all background activity on my laptop. We'll see how this works. I'll probably use my Elation Operator Pro to program a few stand alone lights to help with song transitions. Now I just have to figure out how to handle songs they play back to back with no transition.... probably with my backup system as well. I could program a few scenes to get me through file change. I'm sure it's going to be quite a challenge.

It great to hear someone with your experience comes up with the same ideas. It reinforces my fear that there are no other solutions and I may have to upgrade my software. Any recommendations?

Ken
I can certainly understand your issues in regards to timing. Even with the big show I do, I have manual access to all scenes just in case I should have to bump something along.

Using my idea of a heavily stepped scene for a song, unless you know what step you're on, forget it!! Once you're screwed, you're screwed until you go into the next song.

Another option you could explore depends on what you're doing. Are there any pre-recorded tracks? If so, you can transition those from a CD, DAT, MD(minidisc) or other playback device and into some low to midrange DAW, say Sonar Home Studio.

You can then sequence on a per channel basis using CC controllers assigned to channels in MyDMX.

This also requires 2 computers: 1 for sequencing, 1 for MyDMX. It also requires 2 MIDI interfaces, 1/machine. It also requires that you spend a LOT of time programming your controllers and DOCUMENT them(in case it loses them).

I just don't see how you can be in a win-win situation. You're at the mercy of the band. IF they throw a big change on the fly at you, thre's not much you can do, at least like IMMEDIATELY, everything takes a little bit of time. Of course, this is why good communication between the tech crew and the stage talent is so important.

You're obviously aware that MyDMX has a limitation in the number of scenes you can use per show file. Of course, I know you're not using that many scenes per song, and I'll bet your re-usable scenes are minimized due to the nature of the music. I certainly understand how that can work.

Somehow, I get the feeling that you're not working with sequenced tracks since the band seems to do the typical live "speed it up a hair" thing.

I think you're right. A DMX controller, along with MyDMX, a DMX combiner(so you can keep both live at the samt time and a OptiBranch/4(may not be needed after the combiner, but good to have anyways) might be some options to look at to allow you to get through transitions.

I'd also see what Jingles has to say about Compu. It may be you're just beyond what MyDMX can offer for your situation.
