ok here is the situation, I own a boat and on the down stairs level is the dance part where the dj and sound system is and upstairs is sort of a sitting area with a few lounges and things like that. I am really bored with just normal house lighting up there and what to make a really good looking area by the use of mood lighting.
What do you guys think will be the best colour to use to light up the area, i am thinking blue. but what sort of lights should i use.
i am thinking of puting a snake light around the roof but that is all i have thought of so far. the only problem is with a snake light the dont look that good. I want to give it a nice wash.
hope this makes sense
thanks

There a variety of ways to achieve what you are looking to do. The first thing that comes to mind when attempting anything of this sort is your budget. That will dictate what fixtures are to be used. If you are looking to get away very inexpensive then you can can go with basic wash lights, par cans etc. If your looking for more versatility (and more money) then you can step up to either LED fixtures or dmx controlled color wash effects. This would allow you to change between colors instead of having one static color. This would in turn change the look of the space you are lighting depending on the color. What i'm trying to say is depending on the situation you can alter the color of the room with the push of a button. If you went that route which would be my choice. You could then add a couple of moving head or moving mirror fixtures to scan some pictures around the room, or better yet get a couple custom gobo's (pictures) and have the scanners move your boat's name, or logo around the room. It all comes back to what your budget would allow. Hope this helps ... if not let me know and i'll try to provide more details. -Mike
i defintly can not use moving head lights as the roof is not very high, par cans might be a good way to go. i really want to use the colour blue as i think that gives the room a nice clean feel. would par can ive that sort of feel or would they just light the room up just the same as the house lights but with a different colour
thanks
I personally am not a big fan of par cans. That would not be the route I would choose to go in however, for a limited budget that would be your answer. If moving fixtures are out of the question for you then I would suggest checking out some LED products. The link that was posted to elations LED product in this topic is an excellent idea. I know your big on going with the color blue... However, I feel it would be in your best interest to have the ability to change the color on a moments notice. With the use of an LED fixture you can achieve this. However, if you feel you would never even remotely want to change to another color other then blue then I would suggest going with the par can route. Par can's will provide you with washes of "blue" light in your case. As for control of them did you have any thoughts as to what type of control system you were going to use? Did you plan on using dmx dimmer packs. Or non dmx relays, for example adj's light copilot and similar controlers. How big of an area are we talking about here? overall dimensions and ceiling height? Just another thought I know your overall goal here is to add some interest to the space. Why not add another aspect to it such as water features. Water Panels and columns. Suttle waterfall effects. If you check this link... It will take you directly to specialized mood lighting. If you use the navigation on the left side you can find all sorts of water panels and water features. Mood Lighting and Water Panels
the area is not a really huge area, i couldnt tell you how high the roof is just yet cause i am not quite sure. The sort of effect i am looking for is the sort of things you see in some nightclubs up along the roof and that it is really hard to describe. Madmikey the link you gave me to the site, i saw some of the pictures they have there of some clubs and that is how i want the boat to look. how are they getting that effect?
Its all just color washing, a lot of clubs have like clear countertops etc so the lioght shines through. Fixtures that can give you a general wash work really well. The octopods are cool because the units are individual and you can spread em out maybe somethign to look at. You may want to look at the rainbow tubes as well.
