Here's a twist on the Mirror Ball. First- I think it's the best bang for the buck of all the effects. I put it on a vertical stand, with a motor attached to an arm hanging forward. I take a halogen 50 watt Par 46 pinspot with 2 ez mods and put it on the FLOOR, directly below the ball. To aim it exactly, just look at the lunar eclipse on the ceiling.
The entire room, including the ceiling, gets the dots, or in my case, bagels. A light on either side looks great, but isn't absolutely necessary, since the light shining on the little mirrors just south of the equator put spots on the ceiling.
What are the mods?
1. Attach the bracket to a 4" square board for a base.
2. This one sounds weird, I know. Hang with me. Underground drain pipe, the kind that goes around your house, is connected with a black plastic cylinder, about 7 inches long and about 5 inches in diameter. Get one of these at your local Lowes, Home Depot, (they all have them, just ask for a plastic drain tile coupler) and duct tape it neatly to the front of the par can. This will reduce the halo around the can and the eclipse for a few bucks.
What size ball? 12". It ain't the ball that matters, it's the light! Another light tip- it's the distance of the spot that will crisp up the dots on the walls- take your ball out in the sun some day and you'll see what I mean.
You color changer guys- I'd like to hear your opinion on the floor mount.
