Hi guys, I tried to set-up the scenes to MIDI commands, it doesn't recognize the MIDI at all. I tried with internal MIDI sequencer - Cubase SX3 and external MIDI from Korg Extreme connected to the computer thru USB, this set-up is working fine for about two years. After MYDMX prompts "waiting for MIDI command" it does not recognize ANY MIDI commands, just sits there waiting.
I'm wondering if ANYBODY out there actually has succeded with MIDI control?

I have to check MyDMX, but I recall seeing a function for MIDI trigger. What you need to do is FIRST off TEST to ensure you are getting MIDI working. While it sounds like it make be because you use Cubase, ensure MyDMX is seeing it. Hook up a keyboard or other MIDI controller where you can be absolutely positive of the result you're going to achieve and see if MyDMX recognizes that response. I don't know what MyDMX is looking for. Chances are it is channel and note.

As I've said previously, testing this is on my schedule of things to do, but low on the list due to other projects. Getting my live sound company up and running with new gear is my priority.

For me, MIDI triggering with MyDMX is just icing on the cake, so it's super low priority. I am also getting a new Macbook Pro this weekend, and will be ordering a fresh copy of XP Pro to load on there for use with Bootcamp. That's gonna be my show machine, and once that's done, I'll test more thoroughly. I will be running Sonar on there as well as MyDMX so I expect things to be pretty nifty. My MIDI interface is a MIDISport 2X2, works great via USB.
So, I'm still waiting for anybody that has had any results with MIDI control. My whole set-up is depending on that. I've been doing MIDI for five years, done hundreds of songs, my Korg Extreme keyboard connects to the computer via USB, I've done it hundreds of times, also, I can send MIDI out of Cubase, I've done it lots of times. So the question is, does MYDMX work with MIDI? I downloaded the Elation demo, looks that MYDMX is the made by the same people that made Elation, on Elation you can actually choose which channel and note MIDI will control certain parameters. I'm a musician that recently built a nice lighting system, I play guitar and sing LIVE, I need MIDI control for my lights, I have my songs on a MIDI sequencer, it only makes sense to have the lights controlled that way. I hope that there is somebody out there that has tried this very important feature. Thanks!
ok so what I found was that my dmx will let you assign midi after you program your scenes. If you go to the user mode (the last tab) and right click on your scenes it will say "learn midi command" then click that and then move a fader or press a button on the midi device and it is stored just like that. I had about 8 scene and I got all 8 to trigger via the faders if brought all the way to 127. And I also got it to trigger on the rotary knobs (I know nothing about midi terminology can you tell??) LOL. So I got It to work for me. A little more testing and I'll know if it saves those command notes or not after saving then closing the program. Sincerely,
Just stepping on the proverbial soap box. In my case, it's a stack of empty 64B LED Pro's that I'm using the fixtures for an event on Tuesday.

People, please fully understand your needs and requirements before purchasing a product. I see and read on here too many unwisely purchased fixtures.

If your stuff truly depends on this MIDI stuff, then let me say two things:
1: Why aren't you busting your butt trying to work this out on your own? My time is valuable and I can't spare as much time as I would like to work on other things. As much as I would LOVE to drop everything and work on these issues sometimes, I can't. I'm slammed right now.

2: Did you evaluate this feature before you got the product? Seems like a few well done phone calls could have gotten you the proper direction.

I'm not one of those people who drop a few hundred bucks and hope for the best. I'm the guy who spends a few thousand(OK, around $20K/year) on new gear, training, parts, repairs, whatever. I evaluate EVERYTHING, or at least virtually everything.

Talking with Jingles extensively pushed me to get the 64B LED Pro's(and 8 of them at that) and MyDMX. I gotta say I'm happy with those purchases. I'll fully exploit those later.

So, if MyDMX will work with MIDI and it calls scenes via trigger, well, gee, that just plain makes sense! I can burn a channel just for DMX instructions since I have 32 channels available on my PC(soon to be a MacBook Pro). I can't see needing more than 128 scenes per song.

Right now, the biggest bonus for MyDMX is that I can descriptively name scenes, group them logically and my wife can call them up quickly, with simple key triggers for frequently used scenes.

My test for MyDMX and MIDI will be an audio track that I will sync a light show to using Sonar Home. Nothing outside the box. If that works, and I'd know in about an hour if it does, then I'm satisfied. Right now, wait for MacBook Pro to arrive, then order XP Pro for it. Steps. No way I'm getting to this in May. I'm loading for a show now and I have a lot of new rack gear to attend to.
Thanks Jingles,
That's what I needed to know, that it actually works, I'll figure out what I need to do to get mine going too.

On the other hand, Chris Pickett, what are you, like a teenager? How can you assume thing about people, you have to THINK a little more before posting your remark, the are really hurtfull! Believe me I've done my homework on all the matters before resulting to help from this Forum. WE DON'T CARE about what YOUR priorities are, we ask specific questions that it would be nice if they're answered. If you want general chatter, go in a kids forum.
Now, please don't aswer to this, I don't want to start a war, I just hope that you take this the way is intended, sincere.
I'm answering, because if you did that to me in real, you'd be picking up what's left of your teeth and calling 911 to find the rest of your parts.

If it's so critical, why not get detailed about it? Nope. You're spouting what you're using but not what you're doing. What are you using to trigger? What channel? What note number? Using continiuous controller data?

I've been using MIDI since day 1. I've been doing pro audio for 25 years.

So, I'm putting my money where my mouth is again. Once I get the MacBook Pro running, I'll get out a controller and work on this, but the machine won't be here for a week. Then I'll stuff XP Home on it to get me by for a bit.

What is the EXACT nature of the application:
Are you using a MIDI sequence for playback and TRIGGERING? I am assuming this is the objective.

Describe in detail how a typical event should run. What is the goal, and how do you intend to trigger?

I will emulate your environment.

Man, I've spent $8K on lighting stuff this year alone. between the 64B LED Pros, MyDMX and this MacBook Pro(which will be used for shows mainly), mega ouch.

Let's see anyone else spend that just to play!
OK, try this idea:

1: Make your scenes. You did that.
SAVE!!(do that a lot)

2: Hook up your controller proper to MIDI. use whatever you're used to doing aslong a your controller is sending MIDI data and you can confirm that via whatever means.

3: Tell MyDMX to listen for that trigger.
Say, you press low C on a 61-note keyboard, that normally maps to note 36. Say it's on MIDI channel 16 just for the heck of it.

4: Repeat with another scene and another key. Do this for at least 2 scenes, 8 would be better, but at least enough so you can do some cycling around.

SAVE!!

5: Using your MIDI sequencing software, program in your trigger notes onto the proper channel.
Save

Are you using a MIDI inferface with multiple banks of MIDI ports? It's sort of critical to my theory. Not totally, but what happens next may annoy you if you don't have multiple banks of MIDI channels.

6: Now taht you have your brand spankin' new MIDI sequence(or a tweaked one), play it back. Is MyDMX running? Yes? Still not doing it?

Here's my theory: MyDMX isn't a true MIDI application per say, so it's not behaving on the MIDI bus, for lack of a better word. I think the term "Bridge" is what people use, and it doesn't cross that bridge. Heck, it ain't paying a toll.

Move the MIDI trigger data to a dedicate set of MIDI In/Out, say B for example. Loop the cable from the OUT of B to the IN of B. This effectively generates MIDI IN data, and if you're not recording, it will trigger, and be disposed of promptly as per MIDI Spec 1.0

My theory is based on MyDMX is actively looking at the MIDI IN port. BUT, at the same time, perhaps running a MIDI application at the same time may prevent MyDMX from looking there.

First, try basics. Remove the sequencer from the scenario by not running it. Use your keyboard to general triggers. Test the triggers. Then go into the MIDI application and try the other stuff.

It's sounding like Compu Live is the proper product for this application. It supports bridging from what I am told.

MIDI triggering is different that being a MIDI or MIDI-aware/capable application.

Think more along the lines of a drum trigger unit. It converts the trigger data to MIDI data. In this case, MIDI data is the trigger and MyDMX is converting that to a scene(if programmed for it). When you record a MIDI drum performance, you can play it back but it goes to the "brains", not the triggers. In the MyDMX situation, it doens't have the interface to go to the playback source, only the INPUT source. Since sequencers send data on the MIDI OUT and receive on the IN, I think MyDMX can't see the data because of a lack of bridging.

Sorry, brain fart over. No way of testing. My QS-8 is too heavy and my wife will kill me if I bring it into the house(and so will my back!)
Backus1967, I'm playing with MyDMX in demo mode. I've not yet spent a dime on DMX, but am planning to dropping a few grand once I figure out what I'm doing.

It sounds like my situation is the same as yours. I'm running MyDMX in demo mode on a lenova thinkpad running Windows XP 5.1 SP 2.

I'm connecting to a cheap Yamaha PSR-282 using an M-Audio Sport. I've verified that I can capture note information using Finale.

On a fresh boot, I run MyDMX and load my saved scenes. I go to the User tab and right-click on a saved scene. I see the prompt "Learn Midi Command..." as expected. I click on the prompt, and expect to see another prompt "waiting of midi command" (either a typo in the software or the manual -- should be "waiting for midi command". The 2nd prompt does not appear. Instead, the first prompt disappears and the button for the scene flashes (like a windows repaint). Eventually the process esa.exe from MyDMX crashes.

I'm going to try to dig deeper, but at this point I have two theories:

1) My cheap keyboard is throwing midi signals that Finale is smart enough to ignore. I don't know how to monitor a midi port to see what signals are being sent. It sounds like it should be easy...

2) MyDMX misbehaves in Demo mode. I'm not going spend money to test that theory.

Did you get any satisfaction? I'm going to dig around a bit, but I would appreciate any help from anyone.
I think I downloaded MyDMX software Saturday about 11:00? I'm hoping if the SYSEX signals are messing it up, that it would be simple to have MyDMX filter them. I found a midi monitoring tool that displayed the signals from my Yamaha keyboard to my MidiSport. The keyboard is a toy, really. It has a bunch of pre-programmed songs and a built-in sequencer, so I constantly get a signal that broadcasts the current tempo, even when it's not playing.

I'm just learning midi too.

Someone made a comment on this forum that MyDMX is more of a low end product -- that Elation Compu is a more professional product. I don't think that's really true. I think MyDMX has a chance to take advantage of being later to market by having a better software interface. I don't think midi should be a barrier to usability as was implied by the comment I read.
well I do software support for both companies. I work for elation AND ADJ and I kinda disagree. If you have messed around with Compu you would see the difference. I'm not knocking my DMX Its just If I was gonna program a light show for a concert with intelligents I would use Compu live not my DMX. My DMX doesn't have nearly as many features as Compu live does. My DMX is mainly geared toward DJ's,clubs, and small events. It is a basic controller with a few advanced features you wouldn't find in a regular DMX controller at the same price point.
Also it is possible those notes you were talking about could mess with it. But as far as it goes that us the latest and greatest for my DMX. Maybe you found our only bug haha. I guess you could try uninstalling it and re installing it. Sincerely,
