I have a question about Master/Slave settings with DMX. I have pairs of each 3 different models of American DJ products (Mega Pixel LED, Jelly Fish, DJ Scan 250 EX). I want to run each model of fixture in a Master/Slave mode. Each model of fixture will be at each end of a room

Example:

Front End of the Room: 1 Mega Pixel LED (Master), 1 Jelly Fish (Master), 1 DJ Scan 250 EX (Master)

Rear End of the Room: 1 Mega Pixel LED (Slave), 1 Jelly Fish (Slave), 1 DJ Scan 250 EX (Slave)

If I assign BOTH Mega Pixel LED’s to DMX channel 1, BOTH Jelly Fishes to DMX channel 50 and BOTH DJ Scan 250 EX’s to DMX channel 100, can I daisy chain the DMX cables in/out of each fixture and the SLAVE fixture would know which MASTER fixture to listen to ?

Example:

Mega Pixel LED (Master) --> DMX Out --> Jelly Fish (Master) --> DMX Out --> DJ Scan 250 EX (Master) --> DMX Out --> Mega Pixel LED (Slave) --> DMX Out --> Jelly Fish --> DMX Out --> DJ Scan 250 EX

As has been discussed before:

Master/slave and DMX are mutually exclusive terms. You're either in master/slave mode, sound active mode, stand alone mode or DMX mode.

You're definately lost somewhere.

If you're in DMX mode, you control them via DMX. Period.

If you want to do master/slave mode, you do not need DMX addresses, but you do need to assign which one is the master and which one is the slave.

In master/slave mode, you have to run "compatible" lights on the same line. So, you can run a cable between mega Pixes, another cable between the Jelly fish and a third cable between the DJ SCan 250 EX's. That may be quite a bit of extra cabling, especially in a large room! None of these pairs can touch each other on the "data wire" in master/slave mode, they are incompatible.

Is this making sense to you? Again, you're either in master/slave mode or DMX mode. My advise is to go DMX. You'll run less cabling and if you duplicate addresses(like as you posterd), your idea for the lights doing the same thing at the same time is going to work out quite well EXCEPT for sound active type modes. The master will be your DMX control platform(console or software). But master isn't the correct term anymore, and doesn't enter. Now you can run 1 run to one end of the room, and a second run to the other end of the room. I would however recommend adding an Elation OptiBranch/4 or similar type device to facilitate DMX splits to save on some headaches and cable management issues.
