Hi guys... I just got a VMS4 Unit as I'll be using it for Cupid's performance at MBLV XX.

A couple of questions:

1) The manual said NOTHING about the rubber covers on the jog wheels. They fell right off so I thought it was for shipping. Someone said they are to disable touch sensitivity on the outside part of the jog wheel? Was I supposed to keep these? Now where do I get another set?

2) Talking on that, I cant disable touch sensitivity on VDJ (6.1 OSX). As a matter of fact, when the bass hits, the wheels rattle and the music stops... wayyy too sensitive.

3) I cannot for the life of me get the touch strips to work to scroll through the browser.

Thanks for your help!

Hey Arnoldo,
welcome to my house...lol

1) The rubber rings are for using the outside of the platter for pitch bending. You can order them by contacting parts.americandj.com
2) I have never had bass stop the music through the jog wheels, because the metal jogs are not touch sensative via pressure. They react to the static electricity of your fingers, based on the same principal as a touch lamp.
If you turn off the scratch mode in vdj, or via the mapped button, it should turn off the touch sensativity.
3) Somebody who is better at mapping than I will have to help you out with mapping the strips for browser scrolling.
Thanks, Stevie Ray!

1) ADJ better gimme some free ones because they didn't put ANYWHERE in the manual that those are part of the system. That's BS.

The thing is, I don't want ANY touch sensitivity, but I still need to scratch and such. (Well, scroll and cue... need the vinyl mode)

2) They stop even if I touch it with a wire. This is with both units we tested it with.

Thanks!
Ok.. so I found a few things:

1) Yes, the wheel stops (anywhere, really) when you touch with your hand and leave it there.. it doesn't play until I let go.

2) If I touch it with a normal object, it stops briefly. If I bump into it, it stops.

So yes, let's assume it works like a touch lamp, this means the TOUCH option is done by wiring a ground to the platter. I removed one platter and lo and behold, my idea was right. I removed the cable for the TOUCH control and when I touched it, the music stopped until I let go.

I inspected the wheel... it basically controls a metallic disk that goes through a sensor, like an old Trackball. Even with the touch cable disconnected, if you place your hand on the wheel it still stops momentarily. It shouldn't be a big deal, right? Except it's sensitive to the slightest bump!

So it's overly sensitive... let's turn it down on VDJ. Even if I take the scratch sensitivity ALL THE WAY DOWN to where turning the wheel doesn't scratch at all, it still stops at any bump or touch of the wheel (even with the touch sensor cable removed).

This metal disk has very very very tiny holes which means it's very precise, hence the name HIGH RESOLUTION JOG WHEEL. This is where the problem lies.

The solution? ADJ must write a firmware update that compensates for accidental touches... a buffer of some kind. Makes sense??
not to me - the better the resolution, the better the scratchig abilities, which a lot of ppl indeed need and want. you could try experimenting with some plastic foil placed on the whole jogwheel to remove touch sensitivity.

the playback does not stop when touching on the plastic outer rims.

I will see if I can get someone to send you some new rings.

A far as the jog wheel stopping the music. It sounds like the mapper being used is using a standard jog wheel in scratch mode. This would bypass the touch sensativity, and make any motion of the wheel react. With the touch sensativity on motion of the jog wheel should bend, unless the wheel is being touched. Again I must ask which mapper you are using?
I made my own mapper:

Your help is much appreciated!
Here are some simple answers.

1) If you disable the scratch wheels so they don't scratch. The rubber covers are useless.

2) To disable scratching, simple take the unit out of Vinyl mode. You can do this by pressing the button marked "Vinyl" that is lit above the scratch wheel. Then the wheel is a great pitch bend wheel.

3)To activate "Touch Strips" simply hold down the "Shift" button and move your finger on the strip.

4) The easiest way to go through your music. Simply hold the shift button, then use the "Effect Select" knob to navigate your folder, drives. The, while holding the Shift button, use the "Sample Select" knob to pick your song. Once the song is selected, you can press the "Sample Select" knob to load the song.

Thanks again
Arnolodo,
Sorry it took so long.... Here are some suggestions.

Also can you post your device definition xml?

PS. I will allow you to post your webinar info here in the general section.

<map value="JOG" action="touchwheel" />

That's the default settings. The result is the same as the settings I put in.

Yes, some buttons on my Mapper have been completely changed... that's because I like 'em better that way. Smiler

I like the scratching feature... but it shouldn't stop the moment ANYTHING touches the wheel. Frowner

I'll post the webinar info-- thanks!
