My school just fired their old DJ after the played some "inapproate" songs after being told not to. Anyway, now they hired me to DJ for them, but i don't have any lights. They are paying my $500, and the promsie of the rest of their dances. So I am just wondering what I shold get... I was thinking of maybe a Fascinator or 2, and a Sunray III

What do you think????

Since I respect the purpose of this board, I'll keep my statements free of name brands, since I'm not sure what American DJ still sells (it's been a while since I've purchased new lighting).

I started my DJ'ing with some of the smaller lights and they actually produce a good amount of light. The only kind of light that didn't produce as much as I was hoping for was the kind that have the moonflower effect. Don't get me wrong, those are good for something "extra." There's NOTHING wrong with having some smaller lights, especially if you're just starting out.

I'd get at least two or three smaller lights, a couple of beacons, a strobe (or two), a rope light, and a medium to large mirror ball to get started with. Have enough lights that you can switch to and from throughout dances so you DON'T overheat them (I switch my lighting quite often during dances, so I don't burn-out the motors). Just my 2 cents Smiler .

Since I first started, I've purchased some more lighting along the way...there's always more lights that you can add to you lighting later.
thats doable, here we would be my idea:
2 epsilons
1 razz matazz
1 centurion
2 colorpods
2 lunarpods
1 rotopod
1 neutron star (check to make sure your gigs don'thave eplileptics before using this light)
1 adj copilot (or you go for an aviator if its in your budget range)

optional if you can opt for it i recommend getting these as well:
1 dyno-fog 2 (always check to make sure the event your playing at does not have fire alarms that are triggered by fog, or that the alarms are set to a level where they will not pick it up [you might even want to opt for a volcano fogger instead if you have the money!])
1 flash duo(once again, check about epileptics at the party)
1 mace II

that would really get you setup good without having to opt for intels but still having a really impressive light show that will def work in numerous types of events and situations. if i went over your price range a little (sry if i did) you might have to trim the first list down a lil. hope this helps.

also, btw, i would recomend getting an lts-50t stand and an extra i-beam for this setup. it would probably help for this setup even though you mentioned you don't need stands, and you may always in the future.
