I had a really neat idea. What if ADJ or Elation made an intell whether it was moving yoke or mirror with video and inputs for and a laptop, this way you don't have to buy a seperate projector for videos or images. This way whike you are using your lights using a DMX controller have the lights point towards the screen and you are in business...plus this way you can take pictures and images and have them on the screen on the walls etc. A real money saver!

Actually, there is a light like that. It has minimal colors/gobos, and has that in it too! Its pretty cool, becasue it has zoom, and stuff so it can be resized to fir a certain screen size. Its called the Catalyst, but i dunno who makes it. ADJ or elation should make one, it'd be a cheaper price, and way way better!!!! Big Grin
actucally it has nearly unlimited colors and gobo, plus video effects and more... It is not truly a light tho, the system involves a DLP video projector, Catalyst mirror mount, MacG4 computer, and the catalyst dmx reciever/sender board. Its made by H-i-g-h-e-n-d systems, very expenisve, very complicated, but very cool. I believe it has over 100 dmx channels, if not that many its still a whole lot!
it has minimal gobo's on its gobo wheel. But using the projector feature, you can create your own. The 100+ DMX channels incluse every on board effect that it has, like windows media player has trhat screen with the moving pictures and swirls and stuff, it has that built into it, so there's a lot of channels for color, shape, design and such. It is also very very precise in movement, and an all-over zoom, plus a paning feature if it is displaying against a slanted surface. Each size is also capable of moving. So it can project onto a 10' circle, and then instantly change to fit a trapezoid. And it has pan, tilt, color, gobo, strobing, prisms, speed and stuff. All the channels are there. I think it was about 10k last time I saw one for sale. T-2-K sells it
Okay, the eefect is called the CATALYST and is maded by H*ighend Systems (as said before). I just saw the video and it is so d*mn awesome. It is unbelievable. I was absolutely blown away. I left a puddle of drool on my keyboard...I am not joking. This thing is unbelievable. The Catalyst is actually a whole system that includes a Mac computer, the software, the program ad tons of other gadgets and gizmos. Plus it comes fully stocked with a logo and gobo and lito pattern library. Plus a library full of real time movies and effects. And one of the optional accessories is a special moving head piece that fits on the outside of a projector and is like having exactly what I mentioned before...a intel crossed with a video control unit. It absolutely blew me away. Plus the lighting console that they reccommend ewith the system is a lighting deesigner's dream as it is. You guys have to check it. Highend.com and see the video.
ADJ and Elation...maybe you can come up with a cheaper system simmilar to the catalyst system because it is really used for major concerts. A system more DJ smaller productions family would be amazing. You gotta check it out. I am still in awe. Last time I checked the price...well lets just say...its not cheap! Oh and it does not use 100 DMX channels...more like 20 or 30 I am pretty sure. In fact possible even less than that.

i think it has like 10,000 stock images (gobos) plus you can add your own and do aything to them.

it uses a apple computer for the brains and control by a dmx controller.

i seen own in action in life, and it is mind blowing.

my froends this is the future of lighting as we know it!!!!!!

i think its cost somewhere around $10,000
and that doesnt include the projecter itself, just the mirror and the mac computer.!

im not so sure thoughbeen a while since i read up on it
"I dunno how there can be over 100 DMX channels. dunno if any dmx controller can control 100 or more."
Many, many controllers can control more than 100. You get 512 channels per universe of DMX and the controllers this is meant to match with have multiple universes. However, as I've seen it all the beam information is prestored in the computer so there may be 10 or so channels of actual DMX used so as not to waste a bunch (1 to recall the looks, a few for look modifications, and 4 for beam positioning).

"it has minimal gobo's on its gobo wheel."
It does have minimal gobos, it has zero. And no gobo wheel.

"ADJ and Elation...maybe you can come up with a cheaper system simmilar to the catalyst system because it is really used for major concerts."
I think there may be patent infringement issues involved in that.
I have seen the Catalyst in action and it is truly great, but very expensive. There is no possible way that a DJ could operate the Catalyst and spin at the same time. You definately need a seperate lighting person for this unit. This unit is good for corporate events and concerts.
Okay, so back to my original idea. MAke a light that is like a video projector and an intell. So...there could be a Audio/Video input jack on the base of the unit. Then a mode button that would allow you to switch from "light/intell" mode to "video" mode. This way...you can still control the intell, via DMX controller (pan tilt, even zoom if possible) except you are changing the projection source. I do lots of Weddings and BAr/Bat mitzvahs and most of the time there is a video montage. But what a pain it is having to setup a projector on a tripod and get the screen out etc...when this way...switch your intell into video mode...and your set! I would love to see somehting like this! Price...i;d say you figure half the price of a similar unit...plus half the price of an LCD projector. So probably around $2500 i;d say. Plus if you have more than one unit...you could have the video in several places around the room! Pretty cool huh!!
