Lighting diagram for a Band

Does anyone know any resources for finding diagrams on how to light a 4-piece rock band? Where should the lights go? I see a lot of bands with lights behind them. What's the point of that? Doesn't it just light the backs of their heads? Some diagrams with suggested light placements would be very helpful to a new guy like me.

Whenever I do a concert and only have a limited amount of lights I put them in front of the stage usually off towards the sides a little pointing inward. Ideally lights from both the back and front are the best. E-mai, me is u have n e more questions. Also I can draw a diagram if u need.
