When doing high school dances, I prefer rave style/club style. Color theme being blue, and green... Lights that produce sharp beams(no wash effects). I think the Vertigo, and Avenger effect has gotten old, and out of style. The younger audience enjoys a less bright floor, they feel more comfortable being 'hidden'. Lot's of people have a negative look on this type of scene, because they think students will be doing unapropriate things... Some schools keep a light on at the dance, and it kills the mood... People express(they actually dance, and have a good time instead of stand around) themselves better, when it's harder to see them. Effects like the old ADJ ET(in cool colors) work well. Some guidlines I use... Use interesting lights (not too bright). Don't make it so dim that people can't even see 3 meters in front of them. Don't spotlight on people. Experience with lights(colors, patterns, intervals of flashes, gobos) and see how the crowd reacts. Try to include intels in your light show, they are real useful (if the crowd dosn't like something, intels let you simply change it). Pick a few people in the crowd as indicators... See what they do when the lighting changes... What makes them come out? What makes them stop dancing, and burry themselves back into the back crowd? Look at how many people come out when you use strobes? Try to have fun with the crowd.
