well it's not that complecated,
(i'll try to explen my best)
(it might not be the specifec order that it work's in)

well it start's off by a lamp that is then past throu a color corector,(not all light's have them)then the color wheel , then the gobo wheel ,then in case of the mighty scan there is a shuter unit (it dose the strob and dimming)

then the light go into lens and then go's off the mirro and projects

(but for the light's that are in the higher end there are many more steps)

Bulb

Color Wheel

Gobo Wheel (sometimes the gobo and color wheel are together depends on the light)

Shutter(s)-strobing, black out (bulb stays on), and on most discharge equiped fixtures they are used for dimming.

Lens

Mirror
