Hello, all. New to the forums, not so new to sound and dabbled in lights.

I have a few quick questions about the Scene Setter 24 I just picked up very cheap from a buddy(who, self-admittedly, has no interest in lighting). It belonged to somebody else in his band and that guy's brother did any programming for them. It's primary role will be with my "B" PA system, with occasional uses elsewhere. It doesn't have to be AMAZING. Most bands around here almost detest lights as much as most sound techs. I prefer the show to be as good as the music.

1) I have only found information stating that the SS can only operate 24 channels. That is correct, right? I should be able to work with that, just want to make sure. I won't even get into the mess of dealing with MIDI software until I'm thoroughly convinced I hate myself. Confused

2) Are the channels/faders assignable? I programmed a Chauvet Obey 40 for a local club a few years ago, when I overhauled their whole lighting system. (That's a story for another time.) The Obey 40 allows for fader reassignment. Example: "X" fixture has 4 channels, R, G, B, & Dimmer, in that order. I could reassign them to any order I needed for the controller. I made the RGB channels the same as the RGB of another fixture but kept the Dimmers separate.

If I'm over/understating things, please let me know. My use of the proper terminology should be graded on a curve. I'm a musician first and foremost, and sound tech for "fun" when I don't have gigs lined up.

Thanks in advance, and I hope I can contribute to the forums in the future.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum.

You're probably not going to like the answers I have for you, but here it goes!

1 - You are correct. This console can only control 24 channels. The nice part about that is you can have them all in front of you at once! This unit is really intended for use with a small to medium sized conventional light system which doesn't need the huge channel counts, moving light macros, and the complex cue stacks you'd find in the much larger-format desks. Glad to hear you can make it work though!

2 - As far as I know - no. That's assuming you're using the American DJ brand Scene Setter. I believe the Elation version of essentially the same unit can support custom patching, but the ADJ can't. If you do figure out how - let me know! Though I don't own a Scene Setter I've had to wrestle with one more than once and this would be a good thing to remember! One possible way to cheat a little is to take advantage of your Scene Masters (I think they're called - most consoles call these playbacks, submasters, or memories). Sure, you'll cut your channel count in half, but it might be a solution to get some customization if you have a very small system. Hope this helps!
