For under $1000cdn. You can get either.....
-A DJ Scan System - and maybe 2 color 150's.
-A DJ Scan 250 System.
-2 Roller or Scan Trons.

Either of these would give you a good foundation to start with, and a pretty killer low budget show. Personally I would start with 2 Roller Trons, and then work on adding 2-4 Scan trons to compliment them, and 2-4 Rainbow 250's, or more scantrons to use for color changers for color fill.
Your website hints that you are not only doing super cool DJ gigs but you are also available as a sound provider for live events. You have got to determine what you are planning on doing with your lighting system before you start buying random equipment.

What do you think the focus of your company is leading to?
1: DJ gigs (sock hops, dances, etc)
2: Stage gigs where you will provide sound and lighting for the event such as concerts, plays, coffee houses, church events
3: A combination of both

If your aim is to hit both the DJ and live markets, a good par lighting system will pay for itself in a short time.

>8 par 56 $200 (sometimes cheaper)
>2 DP DMX 20L Dimmer Packs $300 (check ebay for some good deals)
>8 300 watt par 56 lamps $150 (go with 500 watt lamps for more output and a little more cash)
>One of those truss/tripod systems that everyone sells for $150 (use just the tripod stands for stage gigs or use the center span for your strobe and the below mentioned mirror ball for dance gigs. Pre mount your Pars on the T bars to make setup and tear down go by faster. The truss will leave plenty of room for more lights as time goes by)
>DMX operator lighting controller $200 (the reason for using the operator is just in case you later bought some intelligent lighting, you will have a controller that will control both pars and intels. Or you can get a DMX dimmer board for the same price as the DMX Operator)
>12" Mirror Ball, Motor, and two pin spots $100 (good base for any dance lighting system
>2 100 foot 12/3 extension cords $60

$1260 Yeah, I went over but it will pay for itself in a little time.

This system is a good start for stage and dance lighting. It is more versatile than buying a small amount of intels or some lighting effects. When you are not doing DJ or sound gigs, you can rent the lights out to churches, and theatres for plays and productions. The system is also expandable if you wanted to add intelligent lights in the future, the DMX operator will handle both intels and dimmer packs. If you find yourself making money doing stage gigs, you can always purchase 8 more cans, two dimmer packs, and a couple of good 13 foot tripod stands to do back fill lighting for concerts or larger plays.

The reason I am so passionate about this system is that it has worked for me for the past 10 months now. Within two months of buying my original 8 cans, I was able to expand and buy two more dimmer packs and some more cans. Eventually I bought 4 mighty scans. My system (with a few other items) works really well and the most important thing is that it HAS paid for itself through staying busy doing gigs and shows.
