Is the light set to the correct channels?

Not to sound insulting:

Is the dongle plugged in?
Do you have DMX cabling run?
Is the light ON?(don't make me tell the modem story again)

Even without profiles, you still have direct access to the lights via DMX channels. Profiles just help us pathetic meat bags(that would be people) relate to this software and the fixture easier.

I just started again by restarting laptop. plugging lights in to my dmx and then the MYDMX to the laptop and it worked. Why does it not recognise the lights or usb mode unless I do it in this order ?

be wary of the USB cords that come with the interface too. most are good cords but some have shipped faulty. glad you got it fixed. There could be a number of reasons why it only works in that order. any more questions,let me know.

This is the best way I've found to ensure reliable service. That's why. But even in testing fixtures, I find plugging in and out lights and DMX cables can cause problems UNLESS I plug MyDMX first into my Elation optobranch/4 first. Anything I do on the outs is fine.

Looking back, I have always set lighting, cabling and then plugged it into the dongle, then the dongle into the computer. Just made the most logical sense to me. Not quite the same as wiring a mic up, but it goes mic to wire to stagebox. Stagebox ties to FOH via a 56-pair whip, that's terminated properly into the console.
