I bought a fog machine about a year ago so that it would make my light show better by showing the beams of light (especially on the lasers) but it always seems like it really just makes like a cloud of fog and doesnt last too long. Sometimes enough stays in the air so that the beams still show, but not that long. A few months ago i bought the fog storm because in a store they showed it to me and it didnt seem to make a 'cloud' of fog, but it was more like it spread out in the room.

Is there something im doing wrong or is there some other kind of thing i can use instead of a fog machine? I heard about using a haze machine or something.

Anyone have any tips on using a fog machine that would help me out with this?

The trick to fog/haze is understanding the air flow around where you are using it. If air is constantly circulating in, through, and past your location, it is going to take the fog with it and not leave it to 'hang'. If air flow is minimal or isolated to the location where you are using it, then the fog/haze will last longer.

Different brands of fog juice also produce different results.

Haze is much finer in 'texture' than fog. It's thinner in the air and is less noticable, but produces the brilliant beams of light you want to see. Haze also produces much better results for lasers than fog does. Haze is also easier to use for maintaining the desired atmosphere without creating a distraction, as it is a little less obvious when it starts to flow.

Sometimes you have to re-fog/haze once ever few minutes, wheras other times it requires more frequency. Different machines have different output capacities and output densities.
First of all, Fog is better for lasers because it gives you the liquid sky effect. Haze will only make the beams look better. If have some money in your budget, I suggest the Antari X310. Its a Fazer, which combines both effects and looks great. Take a look on their website.
