elation duo 8 recorder/controller

Has anyone used the duo 8 with a regular dmx controller. what is the advantage of having both in the same rack. I have a used duo 8, but they tell me you have to have a controller to program it. why not just use the controller to run the lights. Is there an advantage to having both. (note) I don't know much about either.
