Easy Remote with Ad Hoc Network

I've been using MyDmx2 on my laptop connected to a router via Cat5. With this setup, I haven't had many problems using Easy Remote. Once in a while, ER can't find the device. However, after a restart of my iPad it usually does. There has only been one time where I was SOL at a show because ER just would not find the device, even after multiple restarts.

Unrelated, I decided to try different setups today. If I connect both my laptop and iPad via wifi to a network, ER does not find a device. If I forego a router and use an Ad Hoc Network on my laptop, ER will not detect any device.

I would really like the ad hoc method to work, but it won't. What consideration should be made in order for ER to reliably detect a device?
