I've been looking through the American DJ website and I don't see anything that is obviously a DMX splitter / repeater box.

I'm not looking for anything really fancy. Just a 1 to 2, or 1 to 4 DMX repeater would cover any of our needs.

That way I can have one DMX send run up the wall to the ceiling dimmer packs, and a second DMX send branching out to lights and fog on the stage, without having to loop it all through one extremely long cable.

Though, depending on the repeater box cost, buying all that extra cable rather than the repeater might be less expensive, if more annoying to manage. Smiler

Maybe American DJ makes a repeater, but it isn't named what I am expecting?

ADJ doesn't make those. Elation does. I'm taking it that you want to stay with the same company.

If you're lookng for a rack mount solution, then the Opt-Branch 4 is what you want. But you're looking for something different, not rack mounted, so the DMX Branch 4 is what you would want. Both are 4-way splitters/repeaters with isoloation.

For your application though, what you're describing could go either way, but I definately see a valid usage for a 4-way splitter. My applicatio is similar and for similar reasons. Let's say a front truss run, a back truss run, a back floor run and a front floor/foot lights run.

The only set back is trivial: you need more DMX terminators, but those are cheap and easy to make. You can make 4 for less than $20, probably less than $12 if you can get the XLR's for mega cheap. The cost is so small that it shouldn't be an issue.

If it was me, the cabling idea may make just using cables less expensive. But the splitters also have some protection built in to help prevent nasty spikes and things of that nature travelling back on the shield wire and frying controllers and software dongles. This protection justifies to me the added cost. You're still going to need almost the same amount of cabling anyways, but cable management becomes simplier.

You need to evaluate your application to see what works better for you. Rack mount or floor mount? If you're not using racks, then the DMX Branch/4 is the way to go. If you're into racks, then the Opto-Branch 4 is the right choice.

Head on over to the Elation site, which is also a company that ADJ is a part of or is it the other way around?
the family tree goes like this, ADJ, American audio, elation, acclaim, and the rest. also a few others i cant remember. each one is individually operated. so if you buy a adj light elation doesn't get anything out of it. each company has their strong suits. so back to the topic though. i agree with chris. in fact i always recommend a opto branch 4 for any rig small or big it just really helps stabilize any potentially bad signal occurrences.
Sincerely,
