I picked up a lot of semi-working DJ lights for CHEEP this week. One of the units is an American DJ Vertigo. Right now I've only got one bulb in the unit. It will power up, illuminate the one bulb and turn on the fan. It does not seem to respond to sound however. I've tried clapping right next to it, and cranking up a bass amp in the room with the unit...but there's just no motion. This would seem to indicate the motor's shot, but I was hoping to verify this before I went and ordered a replacement. Can anyone give me adive on how to take this thing apart properly so I can check the motor?

When you turn it on, does it go through it's initial setup motion? If so, I would try replacing the microphone unit in it. Go through their online parts dept. I just replaced the mic/pot assembly for my Mystic (less than $10 delivered), and it works like a champ. For the price, it's worth a try:

Unit : VERTIGO
Item Number : Z-MIC
Quantity in Unit : 1
Price : $2.00 Each
Description : MIC FOR PCB

If it doesn't move at all initially, then it might not be worth going further. There are other components, but since the Vertigo is very inexpensive to begin with, you might do well to just go ahead and replace it.
I haven't looked at it in a few days, but I'm pretty sure that the motor will not turn freely by hand. I've avoided taking the thing fully apart to check things like the transformer, because I wasn't sure how touchy it was to put that motor assembly back together. Am I correct that you have to take the motor assembly apart to get to the guts of a Vertigo?
