I'm considering using myDMX to run my bands light show. My tentative thought is to program the entire concert as a number of scenes and use a midi input to keep everything almost in sync. Our live timing will have some slight variation and I'm thinking I can use a midi pedal to advance to the next light scene at various key points, make everything seem synced. Is this possible?

My second question is with regards to the Chauvet Derby X profile that's in the scan library. This is a multi-group RGB light effect but when I add the fixture to myDMX, I can only ever get it to show a single white light, with a variable strobe effect(edit: this is purely in myDMX as I haven't purchased the fixture yet). Not sure what I'm doing wrong but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I've been using MyDmx for about 8 months now for a live show. Here's my two cents:

Although the program is more suited to DJ's and house lighting applications where a lighting tech is available, I've found that using a USB to MIDI cable connected to a dedicated PC that is running absolutely nothing but MyDmx is working very well. I use a Behringer FCB1010, but any MIDI footpedal should work. The cable is made by Edirol/Roland and is extremely affordable and durable.
Where timing is an issue, get the band to rehearse with a metronome and use a stopwatch to get timings, or do as I do and set up scenes using common tempos (i.e. 120, 85, 72, etc.). I program the footpedal with a blackout and all white (dim) scene in each bank (blackout to expression pedal and white to number 10 switch) so they're always available, then assign color washes and effects scenes in each bank. Then, while playing, I stomp away like a madman (just kidding). It's really not that hard to design a show this way. A lot of users here claim that it's impossible to make this or that happen, but when you realize how to get the program to perform beyond it's assigned capabilities, you start to see how to truly 'customize' your show. Adapt and overcome...

One issue I've encountered is 'dirty' power at venues. Invest a few bucks in an outlet tester and use it at every venue. One missing ground or improperly wired outlet and you could get some astounding results as I have in the past. I had the PC in a different circuit from the lights and they went ape$hi+ on me until I found the problem.

Good luck!
